Ladies I need some help -ovarian cyst

I went to the emergency room with pain in my lower right abdomen. had a cat scan a pelvic exam (why do they insist when they can look at it in a picture) blood tests. finally they give me the choice would you like to stay overnight or would you like to take your appendix out then stay overnight. Naturally all signs pointed to the appendix so I had it removed. While they were in there poking aroound they found the mother of all ovarian cysts, hemmoriging blood. My surgeon calls in a gyn. and he tells my surgeon to clean it up and leave it alone. 3 weeks later and i still have a significant amount of pain. My regular gyn told me that these things are normal and that the surgeon and consult did the right thing. In the mean time i am vomiting, dizzy and walking around in pain. The amazing part is she tells me when i call her (upon vomiting and passing out) she tells me to eat some dry food and keep hydrated but unless my pain is a 9 or 10 on a scale of 1-10 she doesnt see the need to see me. I told her it was about a 4 but I definetly think I should get points for vomiting (+2) and passing out (+ 3 if you don't injure yourself +4 if you manage to smack your head on the toilet seat on the way down) My first question is has anyone ever had one of these with all these symptoms? What wound up happening with your ovarian cyst. My second question is would you get a new doctor? Am I over reacting? Should I just hold out and wait for all the tests and stuff or find someone new now?

Welcome!

Wow, what a story! Is it just me or does it sound like they took your appendix out for nothing? Chances are, it was the cyst causing all your pain. Luckily for the doctors, the appendix isn't needed for anything. How exactly did they miss a huge cyst on the sonogram?

Are you taking any pain medication that would cause you to vomit or pass out? I remember when I took codeine, I had the same reaction. If the medication you're taking isn't causing it, I would see someone else. That doesn't sound right at all! You shouldn't be passing out and vomiting, period. Any time you use lose consciousness, it's serious.

That's just my opinion. I wouldn't put up with it.

I sure hope you feel better soon. It sounds like you've been through so much already.

Best wishes,

Kristin

I agree with Kristin.. if it isn't some medication you are on making you sick.. I'd RUN to another Dr for a 2nd opinion.. You obviously have something going on.. and what is with taking out a healthy appendix??? Hmmm That just isn't right!! You probably had to pay for it too!!! Find someone willing to help you... It never EVER hurts to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

Good Luck,

Gin :)

I feel your pain...literally! I have had more than one type of cyst at a time in the last several years. I've even had a "chocolate" cyst. It was missed during the first surgery to remove a cyst and scar tissue. It was hidden behind an organ and the doctor who performed my gall bladder removal a few months later got it. I still have a cyst but it seems to be "dormant." The most prescribed form of treatment is the birth control pill. I took Loestrin for years. If you are near menopause, the next prescribed treatment is a hysterectomy (sp?). In your case I would definitely seek a second opinion. Nothing like that can be treated should disrupt your life in any way. Good luck!

WOW I feel your pain it sounds like we had the similar experience. I too (no meds) was vomitting and had a high fever which I almost passed out from. I didn't even think I had a fever just uncomfortable and chilled. My fiance insisted on taking my temp and it was 101. He insisted on the 2nd trip the hosp. when I reached my temp was 102.9. I was admitted again and still all points to those pesky cysts!!!

At the time I was hoping they would take out my appendix to rule it out all togethre, but to no avail its still there! Anyway I wish you luck and I would def. get a second opinion.

PS I have been hospitilized twice and still have all my organs and those nasty cysts.

HI. I defintely agree with the fact that you need a second opinion! No one knows your body better than yourself. You know that something is wrong! I am debating whether I should get a second opinion myself. I am only 23 and I began having painful cycles about a year and a half ago where I experienced pain like I have never known and fainting. (where I banged my head on my computer rather than my toilet:( ) Every month since then hasn't been horrible, but some have. My inital gyno suggested that I try different birth controls. After switching me four times, she instructed me that we shouldn't switch much more or we could contribute to the formation of cysts on my ovaries. So I stuck with Ortho-cyclen, and recently the really bad cycles started again. The absolute worst of all time was this week. I called my mom from college balled up in the floor sobbing of pain. She said enough was enough. I now was instructed by a pissed off mother (which you never want to cross..haha)to go into now:gyno #3's office and demand an ultrasound. This ultrasound picked up what 3 paps, and 4 pelvic exams never did. Ya know after so long of being told "honey you are just cramping," oddly enough it was slightly comforting for the technician to say "we have a problem here." Turns out I have a "huge" (as it was said to me by my current gyno) cyst on my left ovary, and 3 "large" ones on my right. She is encouraged that it took a year and a half for them to get to this size, and feels confident that after begining Yasmine (my new birth control) later today, that in three weeks, we should see some shrinkage, and if not we will at that time discuss other methods. I am afraid. I don't want to wait that long if there is a possibilty that my ovaries can be permantely damaged (or already have been). I feel sometimes as though I am not always taken seriously because I am not only under 40, but under 30. Of course, I would rather not have surgery, but I don't know what to do. I am currently taking 1-2 Darvocets every six hours to continue walking upright. My gyno says that she expects me to need the pain meds for about 2 weeks. I have had to drop 2 of my classes. I am supposed to be lying down as much as possible all weekend, and really being cautious for the next 3 weeks as far as how much I exert myself.

As far as you stating that you are vomiting..my gyno said that if I began to vomit, or if the pain was not affected by the meds, then to get back to her office immediately, no matter the hour. So, for you I say SECOND OPINION FOR SURE. Your gyno AT THE LEAST owes you the decentcy to have a face to face meeting with you. I really do hope that you get to feeling better, which I think begins with a new gyno! :)

I had a similar situation with my left ovary. It was bleeding and causing enough pain to make me go to the ER. They did the same tests and also told me it was an appendix problem (until they started the surgery they still weren't sure). After stopping the bleeding with surgery, they did not need to remove the ovary. However, I was definately in more pain for the first few days out of the hospital, then I was expecting. It did take several months for me to stop feeling any pain (even though it got much better). Even so I felt sharp pains now and then, that I had not felt before the surgery. After my last visit they found another "cyst like" occurance on my right ovary, that will require another laproscopy. So if it has only been a few days, get lots of rest because you will probably be feeiling not so well for a few days. I like to think I am tough, but the DR's sometimes expect people to recover and feel better faster than they really do. Her advise about staying hydrated is true - drink lots of fluids. Slight dehydration can explain you passing out. Also, are you taking any pain meds? You could also be having a reaction to a pain medication, as they can often cause upset stomachs.

I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst as a teenager. I would get pains that started as stomach aches but got sharper and more focused (on my right ovary) as the day progressed. This happened four or five times in just under a year, getting worse each time. The last time I was in the most pain I've ever been in so I went to the ER but on the way there I suddenly felt completely fine. The pain went from terrible to gone like someone flipped a light switch. They did an exam but no x-rays or anything and decided that it was probably a cyst and that I had been feeling it each time I ovulated on that side. But since the pain stopped so quickly, they assume it burst. Apparently that is OK because this was about 8 years ago and I've never had a problem since. It did make be vomit when the attacks began but the last time it didn't.

I agree that you should get another opinion, mainly because of the fact that you're passing out. That definately should be looked into further, whether that's being caused by cysts or something else.

Last winter I started having strange periods and spotting all the time. I ignored it for a few months until I found a new Gyno. I went to this doctor for the first time and told him what was going on. He immediatly did a biopsy and told me to wait 2 weeks for the results. When I went back to see him he did a vaginal ultrasound and found an ovarian cyst the size of a softball on my left side. He told me I could wait about two weeks and see if it gets smaller, but he didn't think it would. I waited like you are and went back in two weeks to find that the cyst became solid and I had another one on my right side much smaller. I was immediatly scheduled for surgery and was cut like a c-section across my belly to get it out. I was out of work for 6 weeks and still have some issues with my hormones. I am 27 years old and want children soon. I would get some help from another doctor as soon as you can, there is no reason why you should be suffering. I fortunatly did not have the pain that you have experienced. Please find another doctor that will listen to your problems and give you proper care.

Dear tlynh:

Please tell me what they finally decided to do with you. I am experiencing the same thing right now. I had laproscopy on Thur 5/27. Pain in left abdomin. Nothing showed up on CT, colonoscopy, or ultrasound. During laproscopy, the left ovary was swollen about 4x its normal size. The Dr. opened it and removed a cyst along with a lot of blood within the ovary, not the cyst. The pain in my left side was gone immediately after surgery. It's now been 5 days and the pain is back and is excruciating. Is it too soon for another cyst to be there? Is there something else wrong? What did you find out? Please let me know.
