Hi,

I had a d&c back in July where two polyps were removed from my uterus. Well, before then my periods had become very light and irregular. when an ultrasound was done the lining of my uterus had gotten thicker and all the tests came back normal from the lab after surgery, no precancerous cells, no cancer. My gyne has prescribed provera and I am scared to death to take it. I may have had a clot, a partial blod clot in my leg several years ago, now they're not sure I ever had one. But I am overweight and a smoker and am terrified to take Provera. My periods have become so irregular, but I thought it was more or less due to being extremely overweight and stress. Should I take this med? Has anyone taken this med? Im supposed to take 2 a day from days 14-24 during my cycle, so that is 10 days of taking it for several months. What should I do? Please don't tell me to talk to my doctor, my gyne sees me a few times a year and I don't feel knows me either well enough to make this decision. I don't want this to turn into something serious. I am scared.

Thank you.

Hi there!

My question to you is, what was your doctors reason for putting you on this? Is it to try to regulate your periods? Provera is typically used to 'jump start' your period. Are you having that problem? You mentioned you are irregular, but are you still having a period?

If you're not comfortable taking it, then you have to go back to your doctor and see if there are other alternatives. I know that's not what you want to hear but I don't know what else to tell you. I'm not a doctor.

If you don't like this doctor, ask your friends who they see. Maybe they have some suggestions as to good places to go.

I'm sorry I couldn't help more. Maybe someone here has taken it before.

Kristin

From what I understand, the concern with blood clots is more so

I took Provera back i the late 1980's and early 1990's with good results, my periods were out of control. It would stop the bleeding to give my body a break. This was all being caused by a fibroid tumor. Finally in 1991 the GYN that was treating me gave me 6 monthly injections of Lupron Deprovera, I had no period for 6 months, after that I to this day still have my uterus and the fibroid tumor that was there is still the size of a pea. By the way, I am 49, and I still have my periods, on occasion.
