Sanitary protection for heavy periods

Here's my embarrassing question...

At the start of a period, I have heavy days for the first day or two. My cycle isn't regular so I can't predict when I'll have these heavy days. Once in a while when I get a heavy day at work, I have embarrassing leaking accidents.

On these days I use Always overnight maxi pads (regular, not the ultra thin ones). Some times these pads aren't absorbant enough to keep me going for a few hours, like when I'm stuck in a long meeting or while travelling. I was told using a combo of tampons and maxi pads on these days would help. But I don't feel comfortable wearing tampons.

Does anyone have any other good tips for this problem?

Much appreciated.

There's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Hi cinderkitty/Kristin,

Thanks for your reply. Years ago I tried using tampons a couple times (that I got from public bathroom dispensers) -- it didn't feel right. It could be I don't know how to use them properly or I wasn't using the right one. There are many to choose from so I should do some careful shopping around. It'd be good to find one that fits nicely for daytime use for that one heavy day -- at least it'll give me piece of mind.

I have thought about using Depends liners. These may be good for nighttime while sleeping .... I've stained and ruined a few of my nice sheets that way.

I welcome any other suggestions ...
