question about broken hymen
| Fri, 10-17-2003 - 7:49pm |
I'm 18, and have never had sex before, but when I was around 10 years old I crashed my bike and landed directly on the crossbar. I'm pretty sure I broke my hymen, because it hurt like holy hell and there was blood spots in my underwear. I'm wondering, is my hymen still broken, or has it healed by now? If it hasn't healed, does this mean that I won't bleed the first time I have sex, or that it won't be as uncomfortable? Thanks to anyone who responds.

See, this always made me wonder, too.
I don't believe it is possible to break your hymen by landing against the bar of your bike. That just hurts because you hit your pelvic bone down there and it is a very sensitive area. I've been whacked down their when I fell on the monkey bars as a kid.
You need to have something go inside your vagina to break your hymen. Vigorous exercise and tampon use sometimes break your hymen.
Most young women have already had their hymen's broken by the first time they have sex through tampon use or vigorous exercise. Many
"...a woman can have her hymen torn before she has sex, by trauma such as falling onto an object"
She also wrote, in a different column:
"The hymen can be torn before first sex by tampon use, gynecological exams, a straddle injury (falling on the crossbar of a bike, for example), or other events."
My main question is just whether the hymen heals after it has been broken. After all, the bike accident was 8 years ago. And, of course, it would be nice if the first time I have sex it doesn't hurt as much because my hymen is already broken ;).
From what I've read and been told, the hymen doesn't heal back up once it's actually broken.
