I am so mortified to even have to ask this but I am starting to get scared. I am 33. I have always had heavy periods that last about 5 days. For the past year or two I have had a day or two of brown discharge before my reg. period started. This month, I had 5 DAYS of this, with tiny brown particles, before my regular period began. Last Winter I went to my GYN b/c I had this brown spotting in the MIDDLE of my cycle. He checked me out a bit and said it was probably just a hormonal thing and nothing to worry about unless it becomes bothersome to me. Does anyone else have this problem? I also have developed melasma (discoloration on my face; Brown spots actually - what's with all the new BROWN problems :(in the past couple of years, too, which is a hormonal thing. I'm wondering if it is perimenopause for me?!?! I'd love to hear from anyone else with these symptoms. Thanks!

Welcome Liz!

I can imagine what a real pain it would be to have 10 days of spotting or bleeding!

I have had these symptoms for a while now. I have a few days of brown spotting before my period and then up to two weeks of brown spotting afterward. At first my doctor said I was probably entering perimenopause early (I just turned 40). A recent ultrasound showed a thickened endometrium and now they are taking the spotting into account - along with bleeding after intercourse - and say it could be something. I'm having a sonohystogram on the 4th so I'll let you know what I find out.

My feeling is that the spotting affects quality of life and it's worth finding out if it's something that can be fixed. Push your doctor for another answer. There are blood tests they can do to see if you are really entering menopause. If not, make them find the explanation. I'm going to be a little annoyed if I put up with this for a few years when it could have easily been fixed.

Karen~

I sincerely thank you for your response. It's amazing to realize I'm not alone. I'm going to call tomorrow and schedule another appt. and push for more tests. I'm also a little scared but I don't want to just live in denial and not find some answers. I have a 7-year-old daughter to think about...plus, I still would like one more baby. I agree that it's a major quality of life issue... Good luck with your procedure and I'll be frequenting these boards now so hopefully you'll share what happens...thanks!

Hi, I am having the same problems you are I am 31. I also have the melasma. The spotting has occured for about 2 years keeps getting worst. I have seen the doctor they told me it is probably nothing serious. This is so irritating its like you have you cycle for 2 weeks. Then the melasma they told me is from hormonal changes. I my thyroid levels check it all is fine. Still guessing?

Hi there! I have the same issue and it's going on 4 years (I'm 26, so I can't chalk it up to pre-menopause). I have no discharge for the first week and a half after my period. Then I have a brown, clotty discharge (that smells horrible to boot) up until my period. It makes for a wonderful sex life (note sarcasm). The procedures I've had? It started with a D&C where they determined I had some thickening of the uterine walls. Then I had a laporoscopy (don't know if I'm spelling that correctly). From there I had a vaginal ultrasound and an MRI which all came up with NOTHING. I've tried at least 8 brands of birth control pills. Nada.

HOWEVER...this past summer I had 3 months of no spotting between periods. What was I doing differently? I was on the Atkins diet. Could it be mere coincidence, or is there be a link between carbohydrates/sugars and this issue??
