follow up to cyst problem

Well I finally got the results back from my second ultrasound test on my right ovary. The "mass" as they are now referring to it is the size of an egg and appears to be covered with "an endometrial encasement". The Dr had me go back in for a second ca-125 test (first one was normal). I have had trouble getting a straight answer from my dr, so I was hoping someone might have some insight for me. I am not understanding why they are repeatig this test. From what I can tell it only is accurate 50% of the time and can show a positive for the presence of cancer, endometriosis and various cysts. All of these are things that could be causing the problem. I was also understanding that endometriosis cannot be detected by ultrasound, so why is my DR. referring to this as an endometrial mass? I am frustrated with my DR and just want to know what this could be and what the treatment options are. So far no one has given me this info. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Hi, you may remember me from the endo/fibroids board. I think I responded to you there also.

It's not all too uncommon for docs to want to repeat a CA-125. You're right, endo, fibroids, adenomyosis, cysts, etc. can affect this test. Your doctor probably wants to repeat it again because of your U/S results or maybe to see if the results vary any. Did he say why he wanted to repeat it?

Although endo can only be definitively diagnosed via laparoscopy, it is possible to detect endometriomas on the

Thanks for again helping me out with info. The dr just said her reasoning for the repeat CA-125 was that she "wanted to see how aggressively we need to treat this". Personally I just want to hurry up with the laproscopy test, to see what this "mass" is. I did have a ruptured hemmolagic ovarian (sp?)cyst about 2 years ago, that I had to have emergency surgury on, so I am worried this might also rupture before they figure it out. Are endometriomas typically fluid filled or comprised of tissue? Again thanks for your replies. Just having an ear to listen to my concern is helpful.

Endometriomas are fluid filled. They're often referred to as "chocolate" cysts because of the fluid color, which is a result of blood.

Feel free to stop back by the Endo board and let me know when you're scheduled for a lap, okay? Heck, come back anytime for any reason!

Good luck!
