Cramping without menstrual bleeding

I am a little concerned about my body right now! For the past few days I have had some mild menstrual cramps and lower back pain. These symptoms dont really hurt, they are mostly uncomfortable. I initially dismissed these things as PMS but I havent gotten my period yet! My period was early last month (about a week), I thought this was because my closest girlfriend moved out of town, and my nody was adjusting to my new female roommate.I've taken a pregnancy test(negative) and made an appointment with my gynocologist for next week.
In doing some research, I have discovered that some of the things I am feeling can be related to ovarian cysts. Can these cysts make your period late, or just not come at all? Are they very serious? (I'm 21, I just dont want to by dying of something). Can they affect fertility in later life? When I see my doctor next week should I tell her that suspect that I may have an ovarian cyst?
Also, I read that birth control can help control these cysts. I was on ortho tri cyclen for a few years but stopped when I gained about 10 lbs. Does anyone know about anyother types of birth control that have lower incidents of weight gain and still prevent ovulation?
Mostly, I am just freaked out and I could use any help that anyone can offer. I just want to have peace of mind!
Thanks
Lauren

Welcome Lauren!
If you're absolutely positive you're not pregnant, then a trip to the doctor is your next step.
Ovarian cysts can cause your period to be late or MIA.
Thanks so much for replying to my post quickly! I didnt know that ovarian cysts even existed until this week. I am very attune to my body and used to operating at 100% so any unexplained feelings freak me out (plus I work in an operating room). The BC info is helpful. Just one more question: do ovarian cysts cause the discomfort I am feeling? did you have discomfort? for some women, does the pain only disappear when the cyst is gone?
Thanks
Lauren
They can definitely cause lower back pain.
