Anyone had a cervical polyp?
| Mon, 11-17-2003 - 12:42pm |
I am 7-1/2 weeks pg and started spotting last week. Everything is fine, I've had 3 vaginal ultrasounds that revealed a very healthy growing fetus with 136 bpm heartrate. The cervical exam revealed a polyp that the RE informed me would cause me to spot and that I may spot blood the entire pregnancy. It is red blood, not on my underwear but on the tp. No cramps or anything, so that is not a worry. He told me it had nothing to do with the baby being distressed, just the extra blood flow during pregnancy along with hormones is irritating the polyp. I don't need to have it removed. I am still worried, I'd like to hear from anyone that has this same problem or know someone who did. Please encouraging stories only. TIA!

I've never had a polyp but I just want to offer you support and encouragement!
Ask your doctor if you have concerns - you will be developing a relationship over the next few months - you might as well start now. Good luck and congrats!

Not to be too gross but..do you also have mucosy discharge? I have a very icky slimy yellowish discharge most notably when I wipe. I didn't have discharge like this with my first PG. This is where I usually find a bit of pink tinge or spotting as well. Most of the time its just the yellow mucos though. There is no odor to it so I don't think its an infection. I think its from the polyp. Just wondering if you are experiencing anything like that. My doctor told me that the polyp was the size of a grape. The whole idea of it makes me feel a little weird LOL!
Oh, my doctor also said that when we deliver our babies the polyp will come out as well. All that dilating and a huge baby passing through doesn't leave the polyp much of chance at surviving. So we shouldn't have to get it removed after PG, it will be gone.

Thank you do much for your response. Wow!! The size of a grape? I didn't ask, and they didn't tell me, but now I'm curious. I too have some yellowish discharge, not really, really yellow, but slightly. I also started spotting days before my period over the last year actually after ovulation until my period, so I assume it's been there for a while. Also I have had on and off spotting and I always have it after intercourse.
So glad I am able to hear someone with the same issue. Did your dr. tell you what causes it? I'm glad to hear it will go away after child birth. You can imagine how scared I was when I started to spot after I found out I was pg, I was really upset. I was so relieved to know it has nothing to do w/the baby.
Take care and thanks again.

Yeah, I kind of wish I didn't know this thing was the size of a grape - didn't help that she told me that at that point the baby was the size of a grape as well LOL! Just the visual is kind of disturbing.
I called my doctor again on friday to ask her about the discharge and she said its normal and may be a bit more than usual while PG from the polyp. NOthing to worry about though. I've been too nervous to try intercourse but I may take the plunge one of these days - I know DH is more than ready.
My doctor told me that it could have grown so much from the increased estrogen. I guess estrogen affects them. But I'm not sure exactly where it came from in the first place. One internet site I read said that it could have been from an infection. I did have a bacterial infection in May/June so maybe mine started after that. But it doesn't have to be from infection either. My doctor said they are fairly common though and we normally wouldn't even know it was there (aside from the spotting maybe). I'll be glad when its gone though!
Take care!!!
