Gynecologist from hell

Hi, I'm new here - I just registered!

I wanted to share my experience with a gynecologist. I saw him on Friday.

I know I have a vaginal cyst, I've had it for 9 years. I had it checked out by this same doctor 5 years ago and he told me it was not serious. He wasn't in any hurry to remove it.The cyst hasn't changed in all this time except for 10 days ago when it developed an abcess. So I got an appointment with this gyno, which I'd seen only that once. Bear in mind, I didn't know it was an abcess, I only found out by researching the web.

When I got there on Friday, the abcess was completely gone. It had leaked clear/yellowish fluid for a couple days, then the skin of the abcess itself fell off when I wiped and the cyst was completely back to normal.

I told the gyno about that but he looked *totally* uninterested. He was mad because I hadn't seen him in 5 years. Well, I told him my GP, one of his partners, btw, took care of my pap tests and all that each year. I mean, I *do* see my doctor regularly. He was unimpressed. So he pointed me to his examining room. He did a pap test, which is OK, then looked at the cyst. He said he wanted to take it out and wanted to do a general anaesthesia (sp?) since he had to do one suture or two. I said I wanted a local since I was sure I could withstand it. I mean, they do hysterectomies these days with a local, right? He got all annoyed and said "fine, work it out with the anaesthesiologist, then". Then he left the examining room without a word and left me lying there! I guessed he was finished so I got up and got dressed. I asked him what the cyst was and he said "I have no idea but it's not cancer, you'd be dead by now". I was stunned into silence. I repeated my question about the general-vs-local and he just didn't answer. I asked how long it would take before the procedure and again, he got annoyed: "I have no idea", then, "shouldn't be too long". Then he *does* have a idea, he just doesn't like questions. I remember not liking him very much 5 years ago but now I REALLY don't like him. I don't think any doctors should act like that! He didn't care at all for my questions/requests!.

So I decided to cancel the whole thing and I got an appointment with another gynecologist in January. He's a very experienced doctor, a founder of the gynecology department of a very respectable hospital.

I just wanted to share my experience. Did I overreact or was he really a jerk?

Thank you,

Myriam

He was really a jerk.

I had a gyno tell me that I didn't bathe right. (It was an ulcerated cervix.)

Meanwhile, doctor's with that attitude should be removed from working with the public and sent to do prison exams.

In all fairness, I have an uncle that is a doctor. They tend to get very used to hiding emotions and become very mechanical after a while. Maybe this needs to be brought to this guy's attention. Think of what his attitude could do to someone not as strong as yourself.

I know. Being told "it's not cancer otherwise you'd be dead by now" is definitely NOT acceptable by any standards.

I think I will have that put in my file there. Ugh!

Wow, he must have skipped the course on bedside manner! I would dump him and never give it another thought!!!!! Your dr should be someone you feel comfortable with, and you should always feel free to ask ANY questions...and get full explanations.

And I don't beleive that drs automatically get hard over time. My father was a dr, he was a general practioner in a small town and he dealt with everything you could imagine...and he would never have dreamed of treating a patient like that...even one he didn't like...and there were many that nobody in the office liked!

Best of luck with the next one. You should be able to at the very least expect politeness...and he should have no problem answering your questions!

Exactly! Every time I asked a question, I felt I was wasting his time! Well, dump him I did. I have since made an appointment with a new Gynecologist for Jan. 27. I understand he's a kind gentleman and a good doctor. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Btw, the hospital called me on Friday night to schedule pre-admission tests. The guy (I'm not even calling him a doctor anymore) had neglected to give them the message that I had cancelled - which I had done 4 days before. How professional.... ugh!
