I'm ten days late for my period. My last period was Nov. 7. I've taken 5 HPT, all came out negative. I've taken 1 urine test at my doctors, negative. Although I have an appointment to see my Dr. this Tuesday, i'm so eagar to hear opinions from anyone who may have experienced the same thing. My periods are always between 28 and 30 days apart. I've been off the pill since July and using only spermicidal films as protection. I'm not having any signs of pregnancy (have 2 girls already), but this morning I started spotting and the odor was not of a period. This has never happen to me before. Can anyone share with me what could be happening. Thanks

Have you had any excessive stress in your life?

I went to see my doctor today and he examined me for anything abnormal and said I was not pregnant (which is good) and he didn't notice anything wrong. So why my period started ten days late? Well, could be hormonal, stress, not ovulating on time, etc. Thanks for listening. JeeNee.

I would guess that going off the pill may have affected things, your body is probably just adjusting to not having those extra hormones. I used to always have late and/or early periods and my doctor put me ON the pill to correct it. Other than that could it be stress? Has anything big happened lately? Stress can affect your cycle. Ask your doctor, but I'd guess if you're not pregnant it's probably nothing to worry about.

Hi there,

The ONLY thing that causes your period to be "late" (except in very rare cases) is 1) delayed ovulation or 2) pregnancy. Therefore, there is really no such thing as a "late" period -- just delayed ovulation. (Period always begins approx. 12-14 days after ovulation)

So, if you aren't pregnant, the real question is: what would cause you to ovulate late? Well, there are many things that can cause delayed ovulation - like stress, travel, otc drugs you might be taking, weight gain or loss, etc. Almost all women will experience delayed ovulation at some point, due to relatively innoccuous causes. Remember that our bodies are not machines....and a delayed ovulation (and thus a long cycle) once in a while is really nothing to be concerned with.

If you learn to identify when you ovulate, you will know if you ovulate late in a particular month, and then you won't have to wonder what is going on.

At this point, spotting could indicate:

1) ovulation (sometimes light spotting occurs with O)

2) implantation bleeding (which would mean you are very newly pregnant, and therefore the tests wouldn't necessarily have been accurate)

3) your period beginning.

Hope this helps!

Suzanne.
