Vaginal Applicators and the hymen

Hi everyone,

I would like to thank you in advance for all who've taken their time to view and reply to this message! Your help will be greatly appreciated!

I've had a vaginal infection recently and the physician at my university prescribed a combo pack from Canesten for me. I've never used tampons before and have never masturbated, so I was apprehensive about inserting the applicator. Turns out that it hurt so much that night I absolutely couldn't tell how far the applicator had gotten. When I spoke with my Mom on the phone she almost yelled at me for fear that I will break my hymen (I come from a conservative family.) I went back to the clinic for help and eventually they prescribed Diflucal (I'm not sure whether this is the spelling).

But later on I had to take some antibiotics for a urinal tract infection, and they said that it might have something to do with the slight itching I'm feeling now. I got it checked out and the physician prescribed a vaginal gel for me... And bad news - applicators again. My question is, would applicators break my hymen? And is there anyway to relieve the pain when I insert the applicator? (Is it even normal to feel so much pain that I can't even feel how far the applicator has gotten?

Thank you very, very much for your replies! I'm already stressed enough for university so I can't always drop by the clinic, and this is stressing me out even more... :(

Thanks!

I'm not a physician, but I wanted to offer some moral support to you. I take it that you've never had sexual intercourse before. Just to ease your mind I don't think there is much chance of you tearing your hymen with the plastic applicator. As a rule most penises are bigger than this small tool, this is why you may the tearing of the hymen you have heard about during sexual intercourse. So just be extra careful, try holding your vulva apart before you make the insertion and your hymen should be fine. I feel bad for you that you don't have an older sister, friend or mother that can help you through this. Good luck.

Thank you very much for all your replies, especially your support! You have no idea how much they mean to me :)

To answer Kristin's question, when I had the yeast infection before (the itching I'm currently feeling apparently is NOT a yeast infection), the doctor did use a speculum and yes, it hurt very much. In light of that and the pain I experienced when I tried the applicator from Canesten, they eventually prescribed me the Diflucan.

The university's clinic has multiple doctors and it's not up to us to choose every time we visit, so maybe that's the reason why the particular doctor who gave me the vaginal gel this time around wasn't aware of the trouble I had with the applicators. Since I've already gotten the gel, I think I'll try to relax and be extra careful, see what luck I have this time. Thank you very much for the advice about bringing the issue of my hymen up with the doctor though, I'll be sure to bring that up with them when I visit next time.

Thank you again!
