Spotting before period

Is this normal? I was on the pill for a few months and since I've been off (this is my 3rd period since then) my periods are very different than before. I'm not sure if it might be caused by my taking aleve at the first sign of my period to prevent cramps. That seems to make it stop altogether for about 24 more hours, at which point it starts up really heavy.
Also I am trying to chart because I have some hormonal problems. What counts as day 1? Last night I was bleeding enough to need a pad, but today there is next to nothing.
Thanks :)

Spotting can be normal.
My periods have always been really painful, and they started lasting longer and longer even though they came every 28 days, which is why my doctor put me on the pill. Even on the pill they lasted a long time and while the pain was somewhat more manageable it was still bad. The weird thing is that in the 3 months I've been off it (and like I said I was only on it for 3 months) my periods have been almost pain-free. The only reason I took the aleve yesterday was because in the last 3 months I've also started getting menstrual migraines. I hope I'm not just adjusting!! :)
Here is another question for you :)
My labs show that I might have PCOS or congenital adrenal hyperplasia--I won't be finished with the tests for CAH until I'm back home in March. My new endocrinologist thinks it is possible I was not ovulating before the pill despite my regular periods. I wasn't charting then. As far as I can tell from cm, I am ovulating now. If I was anovulatory before, would that have caused my long periods? Could the pill have jump started ovulation? Because my gyn told me when he took me off the pill that it was fantasy land to think that 3 months on it would fix things...
Sorry so long!
