Scared of Mirena/IUD

Hi everyone,
This is my first post on this Board and I am so happy I found it. It sometimes feels as if I am the only person w/these problems. Got my first period at 11. Always been very irregular. When I don't use the pill, my periods are very irregular but no discomfort at all, and I have no breast or abdominal pain at all. However, sometimes my periods don't stop on their own and the Doc has always given me a prescription for some progesteron which solved te problem.
When I do use the pill, my periods are regular (a couple of days after taking the last pill in the strip and starting a couple of days afterwards), BUT my periopds are extremely (did I say EXTREMELY) painful and heavy, my breasts are VERY tender and I have no sexual appetite while on the pill.
I am 43 now and my gynecologist has finally agreed to take me off the pill. Of course my periods are very irregular and now they cannot stop on their own. My bleeding picks up speed by the minute (or so it seems). Sometimes I am afraid I will bleed to death. I can't get a good night's sleep, because I need to run to the bathroom every 90 minutes to change. The Doc has been giving me medroxypr ac 10 mg, but even that doesn't help anymore. He did a biopsy and everything is fine. He wants to insert an IUD (Mirena), but I am so afraid I will have complications. My body doesn't like metal. I cannot wear earrings. I even tried having a naval piercing and after a year I needed to take it out because it kept getting infected, no matter how clean I kept the piercing. I am so scared the IUD will give me some kind of infection. He had assured me that I would feel no discomfort while doing the biopsy, because there are no nerve endings there, but I was in EXTREME discomfort. I was about to pass out, I could feel all the sharp objects inside me and him pulling the skin off. I don't care about being in pain while he inserts the IUD, I just don't want to have any major complications.
I am diabetic, my sugar levels are under control. My cholesterol is under control, my blood pressure is under control. No children.
Does anyone have any advise. I need to make a decision fast as I have been bleeding for 3 weeks now and I am going on a trip soon. I am kinda avoiding calling the Doc, because he keeps pushing for the Mirena. he says there is no alternative other than a hysterectomy.
Thank you all!!!

Hi chocolatediva2008 and welcome to the board.
The first thing I want to say, which may be a big help to you, is that the Mirena IUC is made of plastic not metal.

Hi Chocolate,
I came here looking for something else and stumble on your post.
I had the Mireana IUD and love it.
Hi Kathy,
Thank you so very much for your reply. I sincerely appreciate it. Although I am still procrastinating a bit, I have basically made up my mind and will have the Mirena inserted.
When it's over and done, I'll let you all know. Thanks again for your moral support.
