Nuvaring for treating BV?

My doctor gave me Nuvaring to try to get the good bacteria to come back, since the repeated use of antibiotics for months has not been helping. Estrogen is supposed to increase the hydrogen peroxide producing lactobacilli. Has anyone heard of using Nuvaring for treating BV and has it been succesful for anyone?

I believe what you're actually refering to is a yeast infection which is caused by antibotics. BV is an overgrowth of this bacteria which requires antibotics. Antibotics will wipe out all bacteria, good or bad.

I've never heard of using any form of bc to treat BV or a yeast infection because BV requires antibotics and bc (birth control) can actually attribute to a yeast infection.

You can try probatic lactobacilli acidiphous (sp?) sold at many pharamacies (cvs, walgreens, etc) or yoguart w/ live and active cultures including Lactobacilli. I've found that much more successive in trying to reset the bacteria balance. And since you've been on so much antibotics, your dr. should probably check for a yeast infection which may be hampering the return of good bacteria as well.

Hi lulubare.

I've not heard of using Nuvaring for treating BV but it does make sense.

No it is bacterial vaginosis that I've had since October. The antibiotics don't work because the lactobacilli never comes back. I have been taking acidophilus for months but no help. The estrogen the Nuvaring releases is supposed to promote the return of lactobacill to rebalance the ecosystem. However i am sceptical, I'm in a lot of pain and I wish I could just take the antibiotics again even if i have to take it over and over for the rest of my life.

Butterfly,

I meant eating yogurt regularly, although I've heard of placing plain unflavored yogurt in the vagina to help restore balance. I can't attest to placing yogurt in there doing any good, but my gyn said eating yogurt is a way to combat a yeast infection and prevent more.

I'm curious what kind of antibiotics you took. I'm taking Metronidazole and I have 2 more days left. It's got awful side effects (I'm nauseous all the time) and I feel like the infection is still there. I know I'm not done with my pills yet, but I've been reading about these chronic bacterial infections and getting freaked out. Before this, I tired Clindesse and yogurt (yep) and they didn't work. Either way, I'm in the same boat as you...

I too have taken Metronidazole for BV. Really hate the taste of it and had to take it several times last year-yuck! This time I begged my gyn for anything other than that and she decided to try Clindesse.

Yes, those pills taste horrendous. There's no way to get them down with out tasting them.

What do you mean the cream is still intact?

My doctor suggested that if my infection doesn't go away after the 2 things we tried, we could do a few days of Clindesse, even though it's a one-dose treatment. The only problem with that is how expensive it is, but I'd do anything to get rid of this!

Unlike say monostat that seems to dissolve after a couple of days this Clindesse seems to still be a solid mass inside me.

That's weird. I didn't have that experience with Clindesse - it oozed out like a cream, but I do remember thinking that for such a small dose, it was coming out for several days. I would mention the solidness to your doctor. Maybe it doesn't matter.

When I went to the gyn (after Clindesse and metrinazole tablets), he said he didn't see any discharge, but took a "swab" and looked at it under a slide. He saw mostly normal cells, but "a few" bacteria. Hmmm. He said to see if anything changed and if, not, to call him. I've felt more normal, but not totally the same (it feels a little dry sometimes, but not as bad as it had been), so I'm going to leave it alone unless it worsens.

I haven't had sex in a while either, so it's really annoying!
