Why has a doctor never suspected this?

Hi there- TIA for responding to my post. Here goes. I have always suffered from cramps and heavy periods and have always complained to the gyno but they've always given me the response that I should feel relief with the pill. Well, I can say that the years I was on the pill, I still had bad cramps. I don't want to take it now because I have a history of heart disease in my family (grandfather died of a heart attack at 49). The last time I tried to take it, it made me feel a little crazy so I would prefer not to take it. I am 34, with two children that are almost 4 and 16 months. I am 5'5'' and weigh bout 118 lbs and exercise a few times a week and otherwise in good health. My period returned last September when my daughter was 9 months (I was nursing) and since then, it has come back with a vengeance that I have never felt before. It is very heavy, very long, and I have cramps, back pain, & leg pain the entire time that I am menstruating. I have also noticed that I feel hip pain in my left hip but I didn't think it was related. In the last two months, I have gotten my period three weeks apart, it has lasted over a week, starts and stops, I have severe back pain and no matter how much ibuprofen or anti inflammatories I take, I still feel it. The pain is so bad that I will sleep with a heating back on my back for four nights in a row. The pain in legs feels as though I've run a marathon and my tendons are very sore. My husband has even noticed how tight the tendons feel-and as soon as my period ends, the pain stops.
I remember periods when I was a teenager and in my 20's this way- they start out heavy, bright red and after the first 4 days, they get lighter and the blood starts to turn brown until it eventually faded. Now, it starts and stops with the blood and flow still heavy and bright red a week after it has begun. Is this normal? I came accross info on fibroids and it sounds like I have similar symptoms but wouldn't this be something that they would have noticed during my ultrasounds/delivery?
thanks. any feedback/info would be appreciated.
I am going to make an appt with the gyno today

Hi,
I would agree it sounds like uterine fibroids. This has been an issue with the women in my family. My older sister, younger sister and mother have all had hysterectomies due to extremely heavy bleeding caused by uterine fibroids. I was never really affected by heavy periods but was on the pill at 15 which may have had an impact. However when I was pregnant with my first child the fibroids went crazy, caused me severe pain which resulted in my taking advil
