As a survivor of sexual abuse and rape, it is much easier for me to deal with a female gyn. I have enough panic without worrying about a male dr.

Thank you for the hugs, Lisa. I am very sorry for those who have to go through what I have in my life. I have had the fortunate luck of being treated by 3 great gyns

I'm very sorry to hear about everyone's bad experiences. Hugs.

I just prefer woman doctors. Not for any specific reason, except that men scare me and I don't want them touching me or even dealing with me at all. There's been a couple of situations where I had to have a man gyno because they were the only one's doing biopsies, but I was very careful to research who I wanted and make sure that I had a good instinct. In the past when I would go to a new male gyno, I would have nightmares the night before about it. Now I just deal with females. They are so much more gentle usually too, and that makes a big difference to me also.

I prefer female for 2 reasons. The one I have now is awesome. She cares and is patient. The other reason is I had a male gyno once. He needed to do a biopsy on my cervix and it hurt like all hell. I didnt cry out in pain but i was crying none the less

My first exam was done by my family doctor, a woman. I think I was 12, maybe 13. I had never been comfortable with her for some reason. As she was getting everything ready & showing me the different instruments, she told me that her kids play with the plastic (clean, unused, of course) speculums as "ducks". She said that she even drew faces on them for the kids! She then proceeded to hold the speculum up for me to see & made "quacking" sounds!! I'm 33, still remember it clearly and still find it very disturbing!

Since then, I've been more comfortable with male doctors in general. It doesn't really matter what I'm seeing them for.
