Menstrual cramps - is this normal?

I have always had painful menstrual cramps, but since I have gotten on the pill some 5 years ago I have had milder cramps and I do not have to miss school/work. But two weeks ago I had to go to Europe for a funeral, and because of the time change my schedule in taking the pills got messed up, and I thought it would be okay. Anyway, now that I am back I was due for a period, and I got it this morning as expected. But the pain was horrible and it bought back past memories of when I was not on birth control.
My question is this normal? To have a lot of cramps, to the point where I feel nauseated. The gyn I have told this about all don't think it's anything to be concerned about since the cramps only come and last the day of the period and the birth control pills have helped majorly over the years.
Any advice or suggestions? I am really worried that something is horrible wrong with me. :-(

Welcome to the board!
It sounds like your body may be reacting to the BCP schedule change and the stress your body was probably under from a long flight, time zone differences, a funeral, etc.
