what is going on?

I am 27, I have 3 kids and had 1 ectopic pregnancy (that ruptured- tube removed).  I have always had super regular periods except for when I was breastfeeding my cycle length was longer.  My first 2 children were concieved on the pill (a lower dose one), my 3rd while breastfeeding (and he was the most planned lol), and the ectopic while on a stronger pill.

Before I had kids I had super painful cramps on the first day of my period.  After my first child was born I do not have cramps or have very mild cramps.  But since having kids my periods are super heavy- and I mean SUPER heavy.  I read that the normal woman loses 3 tablespoons of blood during her period (sorry if I am wrong with that info) but I am definately sure that I loose more than that.  I have had doctors comment on how heavy my period is.  One doctor told me that I should not have such heavy periods while on the pill (I am on portia now) and that given my history I am probably just one of those people who do not respond the right way to the pill.

So this month, my period was due saturday, I started spotting last thursday, ver mild spotting and then it stopped.  On Monday I started getting sharp cramping on my right side (my left tube was removed when I had the ectopic pregnancy in September) and I was scared it could be a repeat ectopic.  I went to the doctor for bloodwork and my quant came back completely negative.  They told me to call back if the pain continued or increased.  Yesterday (wednesday) it was worse, sharp pain in right side so I made a doctor appointment.  She ran the tests to check for infection or appendicitis and there is no sign of infection (my white blood cell count was normal).  So I am scheduled for a pelvic ultrasound on Friday.  She was thinking ovarian cyst.

I had started spotting again and after I went home my period showed up for real and it is the heaviest period I have ever had in my life!  I swear it looks like I am bleeding to death!  I started by passing a (so sorry tmi) larger than grape sized clot.  Several more clots since then and Since yesterday I am sure that I have bled more than 3 tablespoons.  I still have the ocasional pain on the right side.  I think that any women who has ever had an ectopic pregnancy worries about the repeat- but like I said my quant was completely negative.  Otherwise I would think maybe this tube ruptured too.

What is going on?  If I have a cyst will it have to be removed?

There is currently the discussion in my house (and I have a consultation set up) about getting my remaining tube tied.  I am not 100% sure I don't want another baby (dh is sure) but I think that the pill is definately not working for me and since I have had an ectopic pregnancy there are other methods that I cannot use.  I guess if my right ovary needs to be removed it will no longer be an issue, no left tube no right ovary lol.

One more question, does anyone here believe in post tubal ligation syndrome?

Thanks (and HI misa101)

Hi Christy and welcome to the board.

The pain and irregularity of this period sounds very much like an ovarian cyst.
