D&C Question & Infection? Question
2
Wed, 04-30-2008 - 12:18pm

I had a d&c and a laparoprescy (ya, I can't spell, nor can I say that one!) to remove a uterine polyp on 04/23. They of course, took the polyp to get tested. In the meantime they put me on antibiotics because they said my uterus & ovaries appeared "red instead of pink", which generally means an infection. At my pre-op appointment on the 21st, they did a blood test and urine culture. So far, nothing has grown in the culture.

My questions are:

1) How long until I can use tampons & have intercourse?

2) What are the possible causes of the discoloration of my uterus and ovaries?

If you could please help me that'd be great. I'd really appreciate it. My doctor has been very hard to get ahold of & my follow up appointment isn't for about a month. Thank you very much.

Hi Miss Shawna and welcome to the board.

Here is information I found in our OB/GYN Health Center:

Patients can usually return to their regular activities within a day or two, including their jobs as long as they do not involve physical labor. However, women should refrain from sexual intercourse and the use of tampons for at least seven days. Sanitary napkins (pads) can be used during this time for discharge that occurs from the procedure. Douches should also be avoided for two weeks following the procedure to prevent exposure to bacteria that may cause infection or inflammation.

Patients may receive oral medication to treat any postoperative pain, such as severe cramps and back pain. Pain usually disappears within 24 hours. Patients may also receive antibiotics to prevent infection. It is not unusual for patients to experience slight bleeding or staining for 5 to 14 days following the procedure.
