HPT says + but ultrasound says no...HELP

Recently at 12 weeks post partum I got scared with not seeing AF so I took a HPT.  The result was positive but very light.  So I went to a pregnancy clinic and took another test and it was positive but still very light (this was the same day).  DH had already decided we were done with kids and I already had a tubal scheduled.  So we were opting for a medical abortion.  I made my appointment and when I had the ultrasound the Doc asked me if I had positive tests.  I said yes and then the nurse said they were going to test me and then do an ultrasound on a different machine.  This was 4 days after my home tests.  They did the urine test and it came back positive but extremely light.  In the other ultrasound room the Doc couldn't find any evidence of a pregnancy.  He showed me a picture and said my uterus was slightly thickened but he couldn't find anything to indicate I was pregnant.  So they did a blood test and the hcg level was 342 which he said was about 1-3 weeks.  He thought I may be very early anyways.  So he told me to wait a wek and retest at home and call him with the results.  So I retested and the same thing, positive but very light.  He wanted me to wait yet another week and retest but I told him I wanted another blood test to see if the hcg levels went up.  So I will do that tomorrow.

I saw a previous post on this exact sitaution but the poster never came back to update.  I read the links provided but they didn't give any kind of answer.  I am wondering if anyone else has had this situation that could help me.

Thanks so much!

It's possible that it's too early--but I think they would have seen something with the ultrasound. It's also possible that you miscarried and it was so early you did not even notice (happens all the time). It is also possible that you are not pregnant in your uterus and that would mean you have an ectopic and need immediate medical attention (depending on which ultrasounds they did they should have seen this, but I am not sure).

It could be that there are lingering hormones from your recent pregnancy, or that you are experiencing an abnormal pregnancy.
