Bleeding at/before ovulation

Hi All,
I am almost 36 and I have been having problems for about 3 1/2 yrs with irregular periods, very heavy bleeding, extreme PMS symptoms (ever since my youngest was born, basically). Last June I started having bleeding b/t periods. My doc put me on Yaz with no help - the bleeding b/t periods got worse. Then we tried Loestrin24, same deal - no help. I've had a bunch of tests, all negative. So, I decided to go off the pill and try a natural approach for dealing with perimenopause - huge difference - no more extreme PMS symptoms, more regular periods, still have heavy bleeding, fatigue and hot flashes from time to time. (Before this started I was very regular with no PMS symptoms and if I was an hour late I knew I was pregnant, so this is very frustrating)
So, now I have noticed a pattern to the bleeding b/t periods during the last 2-3 months. It is occurring right before/during ovulation. I've done some reading on this but I'm not sure what to think. Some articles say that they don't know what causes it but that it is normal. Can someone please tell me how this can be normal? If I was trying to get pregnant and am having bleeding at ovulation, how can that be normal?
Confused,
Heather

Hi Heather.
Ovulation bleeding/spotting is actually pretty common.

Thanks Lisa. I checked out the sites you included and they were very helpful. I guess my only concern is that my bleeding is not light and pink. It is very heavy and bright red just like my menstrual cycle. It will last anywhere from 1-3 or more days around my ovulation time. I'm not sure what this could be indicating but I'm thinking that it is not normal.
