My Mother ended up in ER and hospitalized three weeks ago with pelvic pain, chills, fever, nausea, bladder spasms.  They found an infection and gave her IV antibiotics.  Then later that week she was still in severe pain and same symtoms so she saw a urologist and he gave her a different antibiotic.  Then she got very sick again the next week back to ER back in hospital for several days with infection and dehydration.  They did find a large cyst and sent her to a GYN she thought it was probably bladder related sent her to have a test with urologist and he checked bladder, kidneys, etc and everything was fine.  He sent her back to GYN.  The GYN wants to do a hysterectomy and remove the cyst.  I am very worried about something else because of the fever and chills.  Has anyone ever had a cyst that caused fever and chills?  The bladder spasms and pain make sense with a large cyst.  Any ideas?

Welcome tscmommy.

To me it sounds like your mom has the classic symptoms of a ruptured cyst:

Most ovarian cysts are small and do not causes symptoms. When symptoms are present, the most common is pain or a sense of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvis. The pain can be sharp, intermittent, sudden in onset and severe. Other symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal bloating or distention

  • A dull ache in the lower back and thighs

  • Pelvic pain during movement or sexual intercourse

  • Painful or irregular menstrual periods, including a lengthened or shortened menstrual cycle or an absence of menstruation (amenorrhea)

  • Weight gain

  • Nausea

  • Breast tenderness

  • Problems passing urine completely

  • Pain during bowel movements

Patients experiencing the following symptoms should seek medical attention immediately because they could indicate a potential emergency:

  • Fever

  • Vomiting

  • Rapid breathing

  • Weakness

  • Cold, clammy skin
