26 days of bleeding after 1 week late...

Hi ladies,

I have something strange going on, and I don't know what to do about it. Here's the deal...

I have SUPER regular periods. Wednesdays, noon, the cramping starts, 1-2 days of spotting, then 2-3 days of REALLY heavy flow, then it tapers off ending on the 6th or 7th day. I should have started on May 7th. No period. Okay, DH and I aren't actively trying, but we aren't trying to prevent pregnancy either. I waited a little over a week, tested at home and came up negative on May 16th.  On the 18th I started spotting- enough where I had to wear a liner, but not too much either. Brownish, not really pink. That lasted about a week. Then the flow got a little heavier for about 2 days, but never up to where it normally is. I have been spotting ever since, with some heavier flow here and there since. Today makes day 26 (I guess it's 27 now?). This comes with light to moderate cramping on the lower right side of belly.

I had my annual on March 31st, nothing irregular, everything was good. Thyroid was tested at that time due to family history. Had a fasting glucose test (husband just diagnosed with diabetes in January). Everything was great. Called the doctor on day 18 of bleeding, got an appointment, they did an ultrasound and another pregnancy test (still negative), and nothing really showed on the ultrasound other than "small cysts on ovaries" which the doctor and the radiologist deemed normal. When I spoke to the nurse today to get the results of the ultrasound, she suggested I come back in for another pap next week.

Does anybody have any information as to what could be going on here? I am very frustrated, achy, and tired of feeling like, "what the heck is going on?".

Thanks for any input.

Courtney.

Welcome to the board.

Those small cysts on the ovaries could very well be what is causing this bleeding. Your body may have tried to ovulate several times, but failed, due to the cysts developing, rather than the eggs releasing as they should. Once your body has tried to ovulate several times, but has been unsuccessful, then the lining in your uterus can destabilize, causing breakthrough bleeding.

That's my best guess at what is going on, since nothing else showed up in the ultrasound. Did your doctor do any hormone tests? If you haven't ovulated properly, but your body has tried several times, there could be elevated levels of estrogen in your body. You may need to discuss giving your body a kick start to its real period by taking something like Provera, which is a 7-10 day course of progesterone. This may help to reset your cycle back to normal.

After putting up with bleeding for this long, something needs to be done. A pap test is unlikely to help, since you are bleeding, which would prevent the test from giving an accurate result. Normal swab tests to check for infection could be useful, but not a pap test.

Thank you for the info. I was wondering about bloodwork and what could be done. I have an appointment for tomorrow morning for another pap, which I personally think is futile.
