Question about the cervix?

I recently had my first pap smear at a military hospital. My doctor was... well, all up in there for what seemed an unusually long time, before he told me that I have a downward-pointed cervix. The results said I am not at risk for HPV but I am concerned, what does it mean to have a downward-pointed cervix? I was too nervous to ask with my mom in the room, but when I do decide to have sex, will that make it painful? Will there be any complications when I have children?

Tilted cervix is pretty common. The only issue is that it can make conception slightly more difficult.

Hi there,

A tilted cervix is really common, and shouldn't really affect you unless it is really tilted. If that is the case, it could make conception a little more difficult, and possibly make giving birth a little more difficult.

Because it was tilted, it can make it more difficult to do paps and get swabs from the cervical canal, but other than that, an annual exam shouldn't be problematic.

And because our cervix moves up and down during our natural cycle, it could simply have been positioned at a more difficult angle than it would be at other times of the month.

Thank you very much for replying. I'm glad to know that it's not some rare thing that would make having a family -really- difficult. As it is, the conception difficulty concerns me slightly, but right now I'm none too worried about it (being a college student and not planning to even start having sex for a good while).

As far as it making things difficult for paps... that would explain why my doctor spent a good deal of time trying to find it....

It moves up and down? Oh goodness. Not too much so, I would imagine, right? Otherwise our innards would be very upset. ;)

Your cervix will be high during fertile times and low during non fertile times. Funny, eh? It also tilts forward and back. It will be extremely posterior (tilting backwards) right before labor begins. During early labor it moves to a forward position.
