It all started about 2 weeks ago (June 19th). I went to a "Passion Party" and we all had to go to the bathroom and put this gel down there that makes you tingly or whatever. The next day, I felt a little itchy so I bought some Yeast-Gard homeopathinc inserts and some Vagisil and it seemed fine.
The next Wednesday (June 25th), I woke up with my period and my vagina was itchy. It got worse and on Friday I bought a Monistat 3 day kit. I couldn't see any discharge, but like i said I had my period. It was very red and itchy with burning and swelling down there. Sunday night was the last of the 3 day kit and I felt the same.
I went to the doctor on Monday and she thought it looked like a yeast infection. My period was pretty much over and I felt really dry with some weird discharge (very sticky, slightly greenish, not really cottage-cheese like but maybe stringy??) For me to see anything I had to literally spread my legs over a mirror and look in. There was no smell either. She tested me for yeast, bacterial vaginitis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, all which came back negative. Also, am in a monogamous relationship (don't use condoms but I am on the pill) and we have been together for 3 years. He has been at work on a ship in the middle of the ocean for a few weeks so the last time we had sex was June 15th.
She told me to take Metronidazole Vaginal Gel (5 days) so she was assuming I have BV. My first treatment was last night and the second is tonight. I still feel the same as a week ago and the gel makes me feel even drier. It's so swollen and red in there it's tight to put in the applicator. I'm very aggravated and feel like they just randomly picked a medicine that seems to be doing nothing so far. Is there something else I could have or be tested for??? I'm going to finish the metronidazole gel but if it doesn't go away I don't know what to do and doctors seem like they don't care much. I just want to know exactly what it is and get rid of it, not wait around and see if what happens. Thanks...

Hi there,
It sounds like it could very well be an allergic reaction to the product you tried. Since you have been adding further medications/chemicals to an already irritated area, it is probably making it worse.
As the other poster said, try sitting in a warm bath with baking soda in it for a while. You might also want to try taking an antihistamine, and apply aloe vera gel to the area to soothe the irritation. Avoid soaps and anything that could irritate it until it clears up. If the irritation doesn't start to improve within a couple of days of trying this, then you should ring your doctor again.
