Is BV Contagious

About 2 weeks ago I had some annoying external vaginal itching (no discharge). I didn't do anything about it because I was going for my annual gyn appointment in a few days anyway. When I went, he didn't seem to think it was anything and just told me to use some lotrimin but did the tests anyway. That weekend my husband and I had sex twice. The doctor called after the weekend and prescribed metronidazole gel for bacterial vaginitis which I am almost finished with. Is it possible that I could have passed the infection to my husband?

Hi there,

Unless you start to get recurrences of BV, it's generally not assumed to be contagious. It is possible that your husband could get it, and pass it back to you, but this is considered to happen in rare instances.

Be aware that you might get a yeast infection from the use of the antibiotics, so don't assume straight away that it is BV again (sometimes they are mistaken for one or the other).

If you do start to have recurrences of it, get your DH treated. And you should use condoms until you are sure you are clear of the infection.
