Now What???

Three years ago I had an abdominal ultra sound due to pain and heavy periods that lasted more than 7 days, they found fibroid s, how big and how many is unknown to me, I just received a letter stating I had fibroid s. When I asked my doctor about it I was told “they are not big enough to worry aboutâ€. I had insurance at the time, since then I have lost my job. The bleeding and pain has progressed, and I had another ultra sound a month ago, fibroid s, one measuring 8 cm… causing a lot of problems and pain, I am scheduled for surgery on the 7th of Nov. . I have recently moved, I have no insurance, and cannot look for employment due to the surgery and recover time. I am going through a women’s clinic, but my out of pocket expenses will be great I may not be able to have the surgery or pay for my medications. Any suggestions????

Is the women's clinic affiliated with a hospital?

Sometime they can shrink them with medication that put you in to menopause temporality.

Thank you for the responses, I am 50 and I have tried the hormones, to old for birth control pill, I guess I was sounding off, I just keep wondering how many times I have to pay for procedures, medications and doctors visits. Health care is so expensive after I lost insurance I wanted to see my primary...$157.00 for 5 min. , it would take me 2 days of work to pay for it.They did suggest payments..LOL
Thanks all for your comments

Hi there,
As another poster suggested, you can take something that will shut down your menstrual cycle, and may help to shrink the fibroids. Fibroid growth is often associated with estrogen, so by shutting down your system, it cuts off the hormone that "feeds" the growth. There is an injection called Lupron that is sometimes used to do this. It's not ideal as a long term solution, but it might just get the fibroids shrunk enough for you to avoid surgery for a while. Also, if you think you are near menopause, it could get you through long enough for your estrogen levels to drop off naturally.
I'm not sure how much it will cost you, but I imagine it would be cheaper than surgery! Might be something to look into.
