I am 36 years old and usually have regular periods . They are usually heavy the first 3 days with cramps and back pain .  Like I said thay are always on time . Full blown PMS . This month i had a brown discharge to strt with ok no big deal expected to start but never really had a real period just spotting for a week then stopped spotted a few more days with really bad back pain . I thought i had a kidney infection drank cranberry juice back pain went away for a little while but came back . Went to the Gynecologist yesterday she did a pap smear and told me that many things could cause irregular bleed ing  like stress , hormonal changes etc . What does this sound like to any of you ? Could it be a STD ? Could it be cancer ?

Hi there,

Well it could be a number of things. Stress and illness can delay your period; hormonal imbalances can do the same; ovarian cysts, fibroids, polyps, etc. Could be any number of things. It's possible you could be heading into early perimenopause.

If there is no family history of cancer, then the risk is low, unless you go months without a period, since a thick endometrial lining can heighten the risk of cancer.

STDs can also cause irregular bleeding, but unless you have reason to suspect that might be a possibility, you can pretty much rule it out.

Have you ruled out pregnancy?

Hi there,

I'm wondering if there is a possibility that you may have had an early miscarriage. Are you sure you weren't pregnant in the previous cycle? Have you been charting, or have you just been counting the days of your cycles?
