First off the dr said if she can't get the vaginal hysterectomy done because of the size of the fibroids, she will have to switch to an abdominal one. That means about 3-4 days in hospital. I can't deal with that. She said she will do her best to get me out of there as quickly as possible. I just want to be at home.
Then I had to go to hospital to preregister and go over everything in the pre-op. The nurse was a witch with a b if you get my drift. I get up at 6am and take a full dose of vallium every morning to go to work at 8am, then at 2:00 and bedtime I take 1/2 dose, so I asked her if I could take it before surgery, she said probally not but to ask the anestheologist. She said why do you have anxiety anyway.... how rude and insensitive. So needless to say I cried thru most of that part. Then the anestheologist came in and was awesome, he said he's my eyes and ears and is there to protect me. He said every body gets anxiety its just that sometimes our body doesn't know how to process it. I cried some there too.... he said to go ahead and take the vallium to get my there, and then some drug he gives when people get there, he usually gives 2 mg, but he was writing my order for 6 mg and an additional 6 mg if I want it. He said he may nearly have me sleeping before anesthesia...lol He said he wants me 100% relaxed. I feel pretty safe with him.
So I had ekg, chest xray, urine and bloodwork. My SO called as I was leaving hospital, and knew I was stressed and he hates that so he met me back at my house and spent an hour. Then my best friend took me out to dinner. My SO just called again (he lives 3 hours away) and now I do feel better.
I just really do not want the abdominal..... thanks for letting me vent.

A friend will come bail you out of jail, but a best friend will be sitting next to you saying "WE screwed up, but man we had fun"!

Hi Bec, I hope you don't have to have the ab surgery, but it's okay if you do. I know it's not the same, but I had major surgery in July (total knee replacement) and the anesthesiologist let me take some of my xanax before the surgery. You might also check with your doc as they would not let me have anymore once I got too my room from post op. I had a very rough first night until they let me have my anti-anxiety meds. The problem is they tend to make the pain meds work a bit too well and it can cause very shallow breathing, which they don't like. Are you having general anesthesia or a spinal?
Also, they told me they would keep me for 3-4 days and I was out in 1.5 days because I was doing so well.
Try to ignore the awful nurses and hopefully you will also get some awesome ones :)
Hi Bec,
Even though the hyster might not go the way you had planned, at the end of the day, once it's all out (however it has to come out), it is only a short road to recovery and the end of all your problems! It will just take a little longer with an abdominal one. Get as much support from your SO and close friends as possible - I'm sure they will understand that this is stressful for you, and you need them. It's really fantastic to wake up after an op and have a friendly familiar face sitting there
Forget that insensitive nurse. She obviously had a bee in her bonnet about something that day, and it's definitely not personal! It's none of her business why you have anxiety - so many people have it these days that it's completely normal (fellow sufferer here). And the prospect of major surgery is a genuine reason to feel anxious. It's probably unlikely you'll end up with her looking after you, but if you do, be a pain in her bum and buzz her for little things on a regular basis (like you need your foot scratched and you are too sore to do it yourself ;-) )
