The Never Ending Period

Hi.  I'm hoping you can help.  I seem to be having a never-ending period.  Please let me give you a little background.  I was on day 36 this month when my period came on very heavy.  36 is not totally unusual for me, but normally I get it on day 28 or 29.  I spotted a bit, and kept waiting.  Finally on day 36 it arrived, and was extremely heavy with lots of clotting.  AGain, not too unusual, although I usually have a relatively heavy period with a bit of clotting.  This was much worse (soaking tampons every 2 hours for 3 days).  I finally got my period on Oct. 10, and today is the 23rd and it is still happening, although it has slowed and I'm only using lightdays, but it just won't go away.  It isn't as bright red as it was, it is more of the brownish color that happens at the end of my period, but it is still happening.  I conceived my children through IVF after 3 years of trying, so I doubt I am having a miscarriage.  Also, I'm closing in on 42 so I'm wondering if I'm having some sort of pre-menopause.  I am also beyond stressed this month, so maybe that is it.  I also have no health insurance, so I can't go see a doctor (hence, the stress, it is all financially related).  Do you guys have any opinions?  Thanks so much.

Hi there,

If heavy periods are the norm for you, and this latest one is obviously much worse, then you probably have a problem that is getting worse. You could have fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, adenomyosis, etc, but without seeing a doctor, there really isn't anything you can do.

There's a link in my siggie for finding information about cheap health care, and I suggest you have a look at the link and see if you can come up with an affordable option so you can see a doctor.

Indeed it could be perimenopause and you may be a candidate for a uterine ablation--or a low dose BCP--but with your level of bleeding it's probably an ablation a GYN would suggest--but is is essential that you get checked as any abnormal bleding can be a sign of a more serious disease including cervical or ovarian cancer. I don't mean to scare you, but get to the GYN ASAP.
