Ok.... so I met the other surgeon today, he will not do the vaginal hysterectomy because one of the fibroids is to close to my bladder and c-section scar. So he said abdominal will take less than 1/2 hour he is taking the ovaries but leaving cervix. He said 2 nights instead of 1 most likely. Will my healing be different? He said I can't go to work as quickly as I would like, will I be able to shower right away? I could not ask him about sex, I'm VERY uncomfortable with men dr. I will get my follow up with my regular gyn, I'm just wanting to know if this is much different and right now on a scale of 1 to 10, my anxiety is about an 8. My SO is out of cell range and my best friend can't take calls at work.  I really want to cry.......

A friend will come bail you out of jail, but a best friend will be sitting next to you saying "WE screwed up, but man we had fun"!

I was very uncomfortable asking questions about sex and other things with my male surgeon recently (plus he evaded all questions and never really answered anything!) and I decided to go around him and see if his very nice female nurse could answer my questions and it turned out she and the other assistant are absolute dolls and answered all my pre-op and post-op questions. Is there a nurse in his office that you can talk to?

My GYN was also able to answer many of my questions even though I had total knee replacement surgery. I am on a low dose BCP and needed to know if I was liable to die from a blood clot! He was able to reassure me and told me all of the special precautions they would take with me. It made me feel much more at ease. maybe the nurse or assistant at the GYN could answer some of your questions via a phone call.

Also, at the hospital where you are having the surgery there is probably a nurse educator who works with these surgeons who may be familiar with his protocols and who can answer your questions. Before my surgery I went to a class at the hospital and the nurse educator said we could call her with any questions. She was also very helpful during pre-op and post-op.

I know how nervous you are. I had to rely a bit more on my anti-anxiety meds before surgery :)

You will be fine and I am sure you will be able to find someone to put your mind at ease.

Hi again,

I don't know if they gave you this link on the hysterectomy board, but it's worth a shot to read at if they didn't:

http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/hysterectomy.html

I know when my mother had her hysterectomy about 20 years ago that she was up and about a couple of weeks later, at full speed. Mainly because we were kids and she had to look after us, and Dad needed to go back to work. So she had to sort of deal with the pain the best she could. But of course, it depends on your pain threshold, if there are any complications, etc as to how long your recovery will take, and what you can manage to get through.
