PERIOD QUESTION

Sat, 11-08-2008 - 10:02pm

I'm not sure if this is the right board or not but I hope someone can help me. My wife is having irregular period for the past two years. Sometimes she may have period once in two months. Recently she had her period after 48 days and some other times she might have her period after 30-34 days.

Is there any problems if a woman had a period in such manner? Is there any medicine to make her get her normal period like any other normal woman?

The last & most important things i would like to ask is is there any problem for her to conceive?

Please answer my questions. Thank you.

Hello. The most important thing for your wife to do is go see her GYN (doctor). Her doctor will examine her to make sure there are no problems or underlying causes for her irregular periods. Most women fair well using birth control pills to regulate their menstrual cycle.

Many women have irregular periods. It is not uncommon. As long as there aren't any medical problems with your wife, having a baby shouldn't be that big of a problem. Although, she may not be ovulating properly so conceiving may take longer.

This is why it is very important for her to see a doctor. Her GYN should be able to help her & take care of her in one visit.

Good luck to you.

Hi muthup.

No it isn't normal, and she should see a gyn about it. The most common cause of irregular periods is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and it can cause problems with fertility (not saying that she wouldn't be able to conceive if she has PCOS, but it could be significantly more difficult). 30-34 days is not outside of the "normal" time for her cycle, but 48 days would be considered irregular. If she has a lot of stress in her life, this can cause irregularities. Hormonal imbalances can cause irregularities, as can illness, sudden weight loss, or weight gain.

Having an irregular period in itself is not dangerous or abnormal. Nor does it mean you will have significant issues conceiving. It's not necessary to take medications such as birth control to regulate the period. There is no reason to risk side effects from synthetic hormones to treat a condition which itself poses no risks. They convinced me long ago to try birth control to "regulate" my cycle. It doesn't work and isn't worth the side effects.

It's a good idea however for your wife to have her hormone levels checked via blood test. Abnormal hormone levels could be a sign of something more serious.

Thanks for everyone who answered me. I have been married for a bit more than 2 months and she is having this problem for the past 2 years. Is there any problem to have sex between both of us and will there be any effect on my wife health due to irregular period if we have frequent sex?

The problems with her irregular period will not be at all affected by your sex life.
