Hi,

I had my tubes tied on Friday (5 days ago) and am now experiencing severe mood swings. I generally have a very hard time with mood swings with PMS; I get sad, depressed, anxious and lose control and get very angry over things that normally would not be a big deal. Now I am not expecting a period any time soon, but having had my tubes tied, I'm wondering if my hormones could have been affected? I am crying, yelling, losing control when I shouldn't. I wouldn't have expected this; it's not like they did anything to my ovaries or uterus - they just tied off the tubes. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I just would add that I am not having any other hormonal types of problems, such as sore breasts or hot flashes or anything.

Also, in case you might think the mood swings are based on any doubt about the procedure, I will add that I have a large family and am getting divorced and entering my 40's, and I had/have no doubts (am not sad or anything) about actually doing this. For me it's the most convenient birth control when I want to be absolutely sure not to get pregnant again.

Any btdt or other info would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Yes your hormones are affected by the surgery. Any abdominal surgery can cut through the tiny hormone sensors around the ovaries and cause hormonal changes. Be on the watch for other hormonal symptoms like irregular, heavy or missing periods, losing hair etc. You can google post tubal ligation syndrome for a list of side effects.

Well, I had seen online certain websites talking about other hormonal problems after tubal ligation, but the websites don't seem to have medical backup or scientific proof. I called my nurse and she said maybe I just overdid things and am overtired; that it would be too soon to have any hormonal changes. Well I do feel tired and depressed and I guess I was wondering if any women on here had first hand experience with this type of thing. I hope this post makes sense, I am just really tired right now. Thanks for your input.

Hi there,

Many women have reported hormonal symptoms after a tubal, but I don't know if anyone has actually studied to see if there is any significance to it, or if the stress of surgery caused a temporary change, etc.

Have you talked to your doctor about your mood swings? The tubal isn't going to cause any improvement, as I'm sure you will know, but if they are related to your hormones, then many women have found that certain types of the birth control pill can help to regulate their symptoms.

"I guess I was wondering if any women on here had first hand experience with this type of thing.."

There have been lots of posts from women complaining of post tubal hormonal issues. You can do a board search to find them.

The only reason I found out about it was because my best friend had horrible issues after her tubal. Anxiety, depression, hair loss, weight gain, extremely heavy bleeding, absence of periods.

I had a tubal about 6 years ago.
