More ?? about Hyper & vitamins...

I read the posts about hypo & vitamins. What about hyper & vitamins? I took vitamins before being diagnosed and have continued. I totally forgot to ask my endo about this. Thankfully, DH does a lot of research about vitamins and saw that some contained iodine.

Also, I saw that you mentioned taking hypo meds on an empty stomach. My endo recommended I take my PTU w/ food. I also take my vitamins at the same time. Does this cause any conflict???

Boy am I confused now.

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,

Gina

Hi Gina - sorry it took me awhile to get back to you!! I had some errands to run. The best thing to do about your vitamins is to check the bottles. Some of them will say not to take them if you have a thyroid condition. Those *always* mean a hyperthyroid condition, not hypo. My Co-enzyme Q10 says that, so does my L-tyrosine and DMAE. They act as stimulants and wouldn't be good for you to take. So check your bottles. Another thing to be aware of is that some supplements/foods can slow the thyroid and that may interfere with your medication - that would include L-carnitine; iodine - if you don't have enough in your system; the floride in anything, like water and tea; and soy products. These may slow your thryoid too much, don't you think ? If they are not really safe for someone with hypothyroid, then I would think they wouldn't be good if you're being treated for hyperthyroid ....... that seems to make sense to me.

As for taking your PTU with or without food - I don't know!! I'll check it for you and get bakc to you! :) Cathy

Ok - I just checked and it said you can take it with or without food, as long as you always take it in the same way everytime! :)

Cathy,

thanks so much for your information. I'm sorry I'm a crazy pest!!!! I've noticed that a lot of the posts are geared towards hypo and as usual, I just have to go the opposite way.....LOL!!!

Now we will start to research our vitamins more thoroughly!!! I will bring up this stuff at my next endo app't in 2 months!!

Thanks again.

Your're not a crazy pest at all!! Quite the opposite! And I guess the majority of thyroid conditions happen to be hypothyroid but I like learning more about hyperthyroid so I'm always glad to look into it. So ... ask away!! :) Cathy
