Just got a phone call from my doc

He told me that they had tested my antithyroid antibodies, and if they come back positive, that indicates an autoimmune disorder. He said mine came back exactly as they had suspected--positive--and that just confirms his original diagnosis.

How often is it that a doctor calls, after 5, on a Friday, to give you test results? I guess I am lucky. He one time called me after 9 pm to check on my youngest daughter. He had seen her earlier in the day and sent us to the ER at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for a sudden high fever. He wanted to check and see how she was feeling (much better and no fever) and what sorts of tests they had run (NONE!--which made him angry). Anyway, I just wanted to share the latest info I got from my doc.

Always nice when it feels like your doctor really cares.

I am not sure. I didn't think to ask. I see him again on August 20th, so I guess I can have any more questions answered. He is on vacation right now, too. That just occurred to me. What a great doc--calling me while on vacation! GEEZ! They just don't make 'em like this anymore. He is NOT an MD, he is a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) and is a family practice guy. We LOVE him in spite of the fact that he is a Minnesota Vikings fan and we are HUGE Green Bay Packers fans!

I am not sure what difference it makes to know whether I have Hashimotos?

Well, you need to know what's causing your thyroid symptoms - and since you have many hypo symptoms and he did a antithyroid antibodies test, I'm guessing it's Hashimoto's. That would be treated differently than if your thyroid anitbodies showed Graves disease, a hyperthyroid condition. Both are autoimmune conditions, though, causing your thyroid condition rather than it being caused by something else, like a virus etc. I always forget to ask my doctor questions, too. Or my son's doctor!! But you'll get all your info on your appointment so that's good to know. So maybe an osteopath is a good choice for thyroid issues?? Cathy :)
