Hypo and Carpal Tunnel?

I'm hypo and have been on Synthroid for a few months now with good results. However, the past month or so I have started experiencing pain in my wrists. The pain is not in my hands, only my wrists and I have not had any tingling in my hands. The other symptom I have noticed is that sometimes the top of my hand will feel like it is on fire (when my wrist is hurting).

I know that being hypothyroid puts me more at risk of carpal tunnel. My other concern is rheumetoid arthritis. (My maternal grandmother suffers from this.) And I know I am also more at risk of this too. Has anyone had similar symptoms?

Thanks.

Hi Danielle - I also had carpal tunnel syndrome and have arthritis in my neck, shoulder and knee. When my medication is at the right dose, those things don't bother me at all. But I do have to be careful not to overdo anything that stresses my wrists and upper body. So perhaps you can identify what's causing the pain for you and ease up on those activities. And when you're on your medication for a little bit longer, you may get some relief there too. When are you due back for another blood test? Cathy

I am not scheduled for another blood test until September. I'm a little concerned though that my dose is too low - I've been completely exhausted lately and a little foggy in the brain. The pain in my wrists only adds to those symptoms and from what I understand, it could indicate that my dosage is not high enough. I started taking a little extra vitamin B6 which I understand helps CTS. But if I have to, I'll go to the doctor sooner. I have to admit though that I have been doing a lot of rock climbing lately and that uses your arms and wrists a lot. So I'll take a little break from that I guess. I just don't want to have to give up too many of my hobbies :(

Thanks for your comments and advice!

Hi Danielle - if you can get to the doctor sooner and get your dose increased, that would be better for you in the long run than waiting until September. They symptoms won't go away on their own and will only get worse. In addition, the longer you're "down", the longer it will take to get back to normal. I've experienced this and it's not fun. Just thought I'd let you know. It's something to think about! Cathy :)
