I go to the gym about five times a week and I keep gaining weight. i am thinking of trying something like metabolife or phase 2, I know its not a great idea but I need to do something. i suffered from eating disorders as a teen adn so have a very bad self image. has anyone out there tried any of these diet pills and to what effect?

Hi - I am so sorry that you are feeling so low! You know, there are a number of different reasons why you might be feeling so bad, your weight it probably the easiest to put your finger on, but having hypothyroidism really wrecks havoc with your emotions! Depression is a common symptom so this may not all be in your head and related to your weight. Sometimes when we are feeling depressed - and we're hypo - we have to look around for a reason!! Being overweight and having these self-esteem issues are easy to identify but there might be simple hormonal imbalances that are underlying your problem.

First off - are you on medication? Do you know what your last TSH levels were and what dose of medication are you taking? How long have you've been taking it? Do you have an idea of how long you may have been hypothyroid before you were diagnosed? I would be so happy to be able to help you through this and help you get on a healthy plan to lose weight and exercise. Those are two passions of mine and I can relate to the desperation that you're feeling. And the despair!! I am hypo also and went for 2 or more years before I was diagnosed. I used to work out hard and watch everything I ate and still gain weight or at least be unable to lose. It's a terrible feeling and some of it is out of your control but some of it is in your control. So if you can start by answering those questions I asked you, it will give me a good idea of where you're at!

Also, keep in mind that losing weight is HARD!!! Whether you're hypothyroid or not! Our society tends to make it look like this is all so easy now, eat this, don't eat that, take this pill and before you know it, you're on some before and after show looking great!! But it doesn't work that way, does it? When you realize the effort that it takes and you're willing to make that effort consistently, week after week, doing what it takes, you'll be successful! So that's what has to happen on the inside. And your thyroid condition needs to be dealt with properly, too, or nothing is going to change! So let me know the answers to those questions, ok? Don't worry - we can do this!! Cathy :)

My suggestion is to talk with your endocrinologist and explain the situation to him/her. It may be that there is something else is going on. I have hypo/Hash too but found out that I also have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) which makes weight loss very difficult for me. The endo prescribed some meds to deal with the PCOS and I am losing weight now. I take 137 mcg of Synthroid as well as the PCOS meds.

This is just what's going on with me but the endo (and my family doctor) warned me that endocrine problems can run in groups (meaning more than just one) so it would probably be helpful to have more testing done.

My thoughts are with you!!
