Has anyone been put a 'trial' of meds for hypo?

The reason I'm asking, I have read that some people have benefited from being put on a low dose of synthroid (or something similar) even though their TSH levels were normal.

I have heard from one Dr that this can't be done because the side effects of taking synthroid if you don't 'need' it are too high. On the other hand, I had a Dr (ob/gyn)suggest it.

I was curious if anyone out there has tried it and what your results were.

Thanks!

If you have subclinical hypothyroidism, symptoms of hypo but still a "normal" TSH level, you can try to find a doctor that will treat you with a low dose of synthroid or other thyroid medication. It's a great idea and works in many cases. It's really up to the doctor. If more doctors would do that, I think there would be much less suffering out there. I can understand if they want to continue testing to rule out other possibilities but most often, everything points to hypothyroidism and the doctor isn't doing anything further to find out why there are symptoms! So there's no treatment at all. It's worth a try for you to see if you can find someone willing to treat you. Maybe you can sit down with the phone book!! :) Or ask around. Sometimes family doctors are willing to do this 0 especially older ones who are familiar with thyroid conditions and aren't so cautious about it because they know it needs to be treated. Cathy :)
