Test Says I'm Normal
| Tue, 07-27-2004 - 8:39pm |
Hi all! I posted last week about thinking I may have a thyroid problem. I got my test results back and the doc said that everything looked normal. I kind of knew that she would say that because I figured that it would be just my luck to not find out what's wrong with me. I have no clue what causes me to be so tired, my hair to fall out so much, my period to be irregular, and weight gain. I wish I did though! It is about to drive me crazy.
Someone had told me that not all thyroid tests are very accurate. What do you all think the likelihood is of the test result saying I'm normal but actually having a thyroid problem?

My doctor did not say much either on what could be wrong with me, so we'll just have to sit and wait...I just don't really feel like being on some sort of medication for the rest of my life :(...

Hi Amelia,
I know what you mean about being on medication for the rest of your life. Initially, I was shocked at the thought of it!
However, once I began taking my medication (and feeling SO MUCH better) I had a change of heart!
With all that I have learned, in such a short time, on this board...I am even MORE enthusiastic about seeing my Dr., discussing levels, and different medications, with him!
I've come to the conclusion that yes, this is a bit of a disappointment...but it could be so much worse!
I've also spoken with a few friends in the medical field, and they've informed me that sometimes, you do not need to be on the medication for the rest of your life...especially when you become Hypothyoid at a relatively young age! (I am not sure if this is also true for Hyperthyroidism.)
So, try not to fret! I hope you're feeling better, soon! : )

Do you know what your level was? Erika is right and it's very important to get the number and to know what you're dealing with. So ........ don't despair!! Can you call your doctor's office and ask the nurse for the actual numbers from your blood test? Once you get them, come back here and post them and we'll take it from there, ok? Cathy :)
I just joined to ivillage and was looking up thyroid problems b/c I too think I have something wrong with that. However I also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome...I would check this out..more and more women are finding out that they have this...symptoms include but vary to each patient (same symptom is enlarged ovaries and more cysts) but they also can experience, weightgain, hairloss, hiritiusm (facial hair, increased hair, etc) irregular periods, cramps, tiredness/fatigue, depression, etc...If your levels for thyroid did turn normal, then it wouldn't be a bad idea to check this out...don't get scared either..all symptoms are not the same for each person...
Good luck..I know how frustrating it is to know something is wrong with yourself and not finding any answers..
Cara
Hmmm how odd is that.
