Newly diagnosed, please help

I just went to the doctor for the first time in 5 years on Tuesday complaining about fatigue, nausea, and headaches (I convinced myself that I was pregnant, despite having had a light period), he gives me a blood test, and yesterday he tells me that I need to start taking meds because my thyroid level was low. I'm on Synthroid. Haven't taken it yet. I'm very much not a pill person.
I have so many questions...
BTW, I'm 25, married, and my name is Karen.
1. Can this condition improve if I lose weight? I'm very active, but about 30 lbs overweight.
2. What options are there to treat this homeopathically? Will I really need to take pills forever more?
3. I read the advice on ivillage, and it said to avoid broccoli, spinach, soy, wheat... I'm a vegetarian so that's like all my diet!!! What in the world should I be eating?
Right now, the plan is to take synthroid for about a month, then I go back in for another blood test.

I am newly diagnosed too! I am also a Vegetarian and have been doing so much research ever since I got my results* I have read some wonderful articles on the benefits of Coconut oil in regards to Hypothyroid that you should look into. My TSH levels are 6.79 and I thought that was only a little high but I am thinking I am really high after seeing that some others. My DH and I are TTC and I am blue to see that this could very well hinder our efforts in regards to my fertility.
Wishing you the best.
Laurie
My name is Karen, too!
I, also, was recently diagnosed after seeing my Dr. for the first time in years!
I know what you mean about not being a pill person. I rarely take any medication, so I was a bit dismayed when I heard I may be on these long term, and more than likely forever.
I was told by a client of mine, who is an RN, that she has seen people taken off of Synthroid - and other meds for Hypothyroidism - after being on it for while...especially when diagnosed at a young age (under 40, or so.) So, I guess there is always a chance you may not need to be on it forever.
Take care!

P.S. I was a vegetarian for 2 years...I caved about a year ago. : (
I should clarify... I'm not 100% vegetarian, more of a moderationist (esp since hubby is an omnivore) but my post seemed to be getting too long already to explain all that. So nice to meet another vegetarian though! Nowadays with all the low-carb stuff it can be hard.
I have been doing some research since my post and I've been feeling better. Since I'm just a little low I'm sure I'll be able to get my health back on track and not have to take the pills anymore. I'm determined, anyway...and usually my determination is enough for me!
Good luck with TTC. DH and I are definitely NOT TTC at this point in time. We're way too young (25).
Thanks! :-)

Part of why I am soooo reluctant to get on this pill (I took my first one today) is because I am not convinced that the diagnosis is correct. We'll see. I figure if I feel better on the pill then it is probably right for me, if I don't, well, it probably wasn't the right diagnosis.
Now that I'm about to become a pill-popper, I figure I might as well take my OB/GYN's advice into the mix and add a pre-natal vitamin. Not that I'm TTC, she just said that every woman of child-bearing years should be on it.
I know how you feel about being dismayed at the thought of lifetime medication. Let's hope for the best together.
