Heart Rate?

I have a question about heart rate. I'm hypo but my heart rate is high. She raised my synthroid level to .175 and we're waiting for tests results before she makes further changes. She said she might change me to a combo drug (pending test results) but she is checking me for other conditions first because they can masquerade some of the hypo symptoms. I *AM* hypo- but she wants to make sure I haven't developed an additional disorder, such as hyperparathyroidism. (ugh)

My question is, I thought my heart rate would be low with hypo? Not fast? I think it was 100 resting?

Hi,

I initially went to the Dr. because my (resting) heart rate was over 100. It freaked me out...not only was it fast but I could feel it pounding in my chest.

He ran blood tests, and everything checked out, except for my thyroid. I am Hypothyroid, as well. From what he told me, a fast heart rate can be a sympton of Hypo/Hyperthyroidism.

He has me on 25mg Toprol XL which is a beta blocker, in addition to Synthroid. I am not thrilled about it...but I have forgotten to take the beta blocker once or twice, and my heart lets me know when it!

Hopefully, I won't be on it long term! I would be interested to know what your further tests results reveal...as perhaps I too, have some other condition I am not aware of.

Take care!

I have been diagnosed w/ hyperthyroid. One of my more severe symptoms was a rapid heart rate. Similar as yours, resting at 100 and more than doubling during aerobics. I could constantly feel it pounding in my chest and seemed like it shook the bed while I would try to sleep. This was a totally horrible feeling.

Now that I'm on PTU, my resting heart rate has gone down to 70. It feels wonderful not to feel it jumping out of my chest.

I was told a rapid heart rate could be indicative of hypo or hyper but more common in hyper. None the less, a rapid resting heart rate is not normal and should be checked!

Anyway, just wanted to add my 2 cents.

Excuse my ignorance, please...but what is "PTU"?

I've seen it mentioned on this board before.

Thank you!

PTU is the abbreviation for Propylthiouracil used to treat hyperthyroid. Guess you can see why it's abbreviated!!! I had to copy the spelling from my Rx bottle!!!

This is all interesting! Thanks for your responses! I appreciate it! I'm anxious to get my test results too- I need something to change! She is looking into hyperparathyroidism (it does resemble thyroidism symptoms somewhat) but goodness, surely I don't have BOTH! *groan* I know my resting heart rate has been higher...BUT...!

Well, I'm off to shed some more! Yep, don't you love our hair loss problems? YIKES!
