i called dr.'s office today to explain that i am not feeling much better with the increase from 1-175 of synthroid. the office staff told me that it usually takes 4-6 wks for the effect to show up in lab and dr. cannot adjust with out values from lab. then they go on to tell me i can come in and talk with dr. on friday and maybe he will order a lab that day. i scheduled the appt. but i am not sure i can go. wondering what good it will do? even if he orders another lab.. has it even been enough time for the change to take effect. will i be jumping the gun and making the problem worse or swinging myself to the other side?

Hi Erika,

That's a good question.

Put your mind to ease and go to the appt.... Regardless if they can do much or not since it's not been the 4-6 wks....it might ease your anxiety to talk to the dr.

Ericka, from what CL cathy has said in earlier posts, it takes time for the medicine to take effect. She has said that it takes a several weeks for it to become regulated in your bloodstream and then you start to feel better. Its kind of like taking antidepressants. It has to build up in your bloodstream to really kick in. Then you will be monitored by the bloodwork/labs. Also CL Cathy has said before that sometimes when your meds are increased you sometimes start to feel better, and later on you might get more symptoms, and that is because you need more thyroid hormone. So sometimes after the dosage increase you do have to wait and see what happens.

If I were you I would go ahead and go to the appt that way you can talk to your doctor and explain where you are coming from and why you are so upset by all of this. Hopefully they can shed some light on the situation.

I realize you are in a position where you feel worse than ever and are worried. When I had mono i thought I had cancer before I was diagnosed, I was getting sicker and weaker and more tired. It took about a 2 weeks before I wasn't "sick" anymore and a month after that before I had regained my energy. I know its hard, and this has had quite an effect on your life recently, but be patient and talk to your doctor and see if there is anything else that you can do to help yourself right now.

Also, when are you taking your thyroid meds? Don't forget that it's most effective to take them first thing in the morning alone. Then eat after a while and do not take any other meds or vitamins for several hours afterwards. It has been found that the thyroid hormone supplements work best that way.

Good luck to you Erika, I hope you can find some comfort soon. --Lisa

thx everyone. i ended up just canceling the appt. it was going to be too much stress on me to take the time off of work (considering i just took maternity leave earlier thjis year and have had sooo many darn dr.'s appt.'s for both andrew and i ever since.) i figured the stress was not worth, what the dr. would tell me- which i figure is that it will take time. so i am just plugging thru it for now. still not much better.... but a bit better since i started cuting my AD in 1/2.

i would say i am at feeling 25% better. it is just slow. and with work and a 6mo old to care for... it is tough. thx for the support.
