Well I dont think we are talking about the same condition, by any chance have you had your andrenals checked? I have ran across several people on the boards that have had very similar experiences like yours that have benefited from supporting their andrenals first, I have also ran across people that are allerigic to the fillers that are in some of the meds, so you may also want to look into a connection there. Resistance to thyroid hormone is a genetic condition, in which there is a mutation in one of the thyroid hormone receptors, since the receptors has impaired function it causes very abnormal numbers when it comes to tests. TSH will be normal, high normal, or slightly elevated while Total and Free T's will be over the high end of the range.

how do you know you are thyroid resistant? is it just the way the T4 and T3 will read when evaluated? that is interesting. cuz i feel like i am resistant! he-he... no really, i upped my meds from 1-175 and i still feel about the same, maybe jsut a tad better. so it seems to not be working or something, and i was thinking that maybe i was just resistant to the thyroid meds...

Well to be honest DNA tests are the only way to truely confirm, but there are things that will make it highly suspicious. The first being abnormal labs I will post a partial lab that I have of my wifes to give you the idea.

Eric

TSH 4.3

FT4 3.08 .62-1.7

I dont have the rest of the lab with me but TT4 and TT3 along with FT3 are over range to the same degree as the FT4 with little or no symptoms of thyroid problems

Hi Eric,

I don't know anything about resistance to thyroid hormones, but everyone's body is different, each it's own chemistry set. I was wondering if you've looked into about.com http://thyroid.about.com/blthyroid.htm, or ithyroid, Mary Shoman is a very well educated thyroid health advocate and she has a lot of great information.

here's some info on thyroid hormone reistance: http://thyroid.about.com/library/glossary/bl-resistance.htm

http://www.thyroidmanager.org/Chapter16/16d-frame.htm --This is a lot of info, but its very thourough,

Here's info about a book dealing with THR: http://www.mcdowellpublishing.com/chap2-6.htm

Thyroid Hormone Resistance

http://www.drlowe.com/# Our website is about "metabolic health." We define metabolic health in this way: A state in which the chemical processes in our cells are sufficient to provide us with at least two things: (1) resistance to sickness and disease, and (2) the vigor, stamina, and well-being needed to fully engage in all aspects of life. At drlowe.com, we focus on what impairs metabolic health, how to recover it, and how to optimize it.

We include a large amount of information on two common and potent causes of poor metabolic health—hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone resistance. We also include information on other causes of poor metabolic health. Among the causes are poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, low physical fitness, hormone imbalances, and various medications and environmental pollutants.

There are also message boards on about.com There seems to be more people on that board, you may have better luck contacting someone who also is resistant. http://thyroid.about.com/mpboards.htm

Good luck. I hope you can find some help for your situation, --Lisa
