Since I had the surgery I was on a ten day run of Bactrum for infection. Since then I find that I have only gone to the bathroom if I take a laxative. Since I already have an autoimmune problem did the antibiotic just wipe out all the good bacteria. Will yogurt or acidolphilus help? I already eat a pretty high fiber diet. I hate taking meds or extra vitamins. Mary

Hi Mary - I was looking up side effects for you and found this:

Endocrine: The sulfonamides (which is what are in Bactrim) bear certain chemical similarities to some goitrogens, diuretics (acetazolamide and the thiazides) and oral hypoglycemic agents. Cross-sensitivity may exist with these agents. Diuresis and hypoglycemia have occurred rarely in patients receiving sulfonamides

Goitrogens are the antithyroid ingredients in goitrogenic foods so .... I'm wondering if you're feeling so fatigued because the Bactrim suppressed your thryoid function. Eventually, your thyroid should recover.

About the bacteria - I don't think the kind of automimmune issues we have are the same thing. I could be wrong. Restoring that good bacteria with yogurt couldn't hurt, though!Cathy :)

Hi Mary...

I think it's good to take acidophilus anytime you take antibiotics, so you can keep your bacteria balanced. I either eat yogurt with acidophilus or take the capsules (you can get from a health food store). The refrigerated ones are the best. If you're taking them while you're taking antibiotics, be sure and take them 4 hrs. later than the antibiotic or the antibiotic will kill the good bacteria you're taking.

Hope this helps~~
