Thyroid first under now over active why?

Hello to All:

I have been under a Dr.'s care for the last eight years. I am being treated for an under active thyroid and I am taking 100 MCG of levoxyl. About four months ago, I started to feel different and a blood test showed an over active thyroid. My Dr. has been bringing me down and I am now down to 50MCG but I still do not feel right. Other than this thyroid problem my health is good, my weight is where it should be, I exercise daily and my diet is healthy. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Hi Babs:

I am not one of the experts on this, but wanted to jump in and say welcome. Do you have test results from your doctor? Is it an endocrinologist that you're seeing?

I think there are people here who have had similar experiences that will be able to share what happened to them.

By coincidence, my endocrinologist told me on Thursday that my type of Hypothyroid (Hashimoto's) sometimes (I mean in some people) will all of a sudden change into hyperthyroid. I haven't come across that in my research, but he happened to mention it. Is your hypo autoimmune?

Hang in there!

Dee.

Hello Dee,

Yes I too have Hashimoto's and have been on medication for the past eight years. I have seen and Endo in the past, however I choose to stick with my GP as I trust him. My meds are coming down, but I do still feel "different". My blood is being tested every six weeks. I have been researching this and have found that if a person is on meds for "hypo" for a long time you can have too much in your system and your body will switch over to "hyper". I was interested to know if any one else experienced anything like this. This thyroid "thing" is a real tricky one. As I said I was "hypo" for eight years and doing very well on meds - now the switch to "hyper" and trying to let my body catch up!

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Hello,

When I was first diagnosed I asked my D.O. if I'd need to be on medication for the rest of my life...he said, "more than likely, yes."

I then asked a client of mine who is an RN, and she said that sometimes medication is not needed forever.

Two opinions both confirming that SOMETIMES your thyroid can return to "normal."

Hi Karen,

Yes, I too have recently been told that the thyroid can return to normal. Just seems so odd to be on meds for so long then to change. I am hopeful that I am returning to a "normal" thyroid.

Thanks for you input I appreciate it.
