thyroid disease?
I ask because at my son's 5 year old check up, the dr was concerned
that there might be a problem because of his weight. We had blood work
done on Friday for TSH and diabetes and some other things, she just
said 'growth hormones'.
He's always been big, he was 10lbs 2 oz and 24 inches long at birth.
And has been growing ever since. He is currently 47 1/2 inches tall
and he weighs 94 pounds. He probably eats somewhat more than an average
5 year old, and he is an active child. In the beginning of summer, he learned to
ride a bike, so bascially all summer he swam and rode his bike. I thought
for sure he would lose some weight, or atleast stop gaining, but that
hasn't been the case.
Just wondering if anyone else out there has been in a similar situation.
Thanks!
Shelly

There is a thyroid board for kids but I don't have the link handy. If you go back to the main health page, you'll see it. And I think I just read that babies who are born with a hypothyroid condition are bigger at birth than most other babies. I would have him tested. No sense not doing it. Since it runs in the family, too, he might have a strong predisposition to it. Only 10% of hypothyroid cases are male - isn't that odd? My son is so happy to be in that group! LOL!
But seriously, it's important to catch it early because of the ramifications with a child's growth - both what you can see and internally. Hope this helps! Cathy :)

Hi Shelly,
Just for your information, we have someone posting on the Thyroid Cancer board this week whose 13-year-old daughter was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
