Question dealing with medicine

Hi all. Monday of this week I went to my dr to talk to him about everything with me. Earlier this summer I was told I had thyroid problems and given this medicine. I took it and then Monday went to visit my dr cause I hadn't had a period in a while. He said he wasn't very surprised because of my thyroids and put me on this medicine (forgot the name) and I have to take it till this lifetime is over (what joy eh?). I was wondering if anybody knew how long I would take the medicine before I started having periods again? I also used to never lose weight and I think it was also cause of my thyroids cause my dr said that was a symptom with them. I hardly eat and I do some exercising to keep myself at least pretty healthy for me. My dr has never said anything about my weight before so I'm assuming I'm alright. Does the medicine help with my weight too? In 2002 I lost around 20 something pounds and then in 2003 (mid part) I started gaining again. *shrug* But thanks to anybody who can answer my question's. I'm supposed to see my dr in mid-late October so if nobody here knows the question's I can ask him then. :) XOXO.

Hi and welcome! Sorry your post slipped down before I saw it. First of all, I would need to know what medication you're taking. Hypothyroidism can affect your period but it us usually much heavier; it doesn't cause it to disappear. Do you have a gynocolgist? Because that would be the doctor to see about your missed periods. There may be something else going on besides your thyroid condition.

In terms of your weight gain/loss, that is very typical of hypothyroidism but ... if you are barely eating to keep yourself "healthy", you're doing yourself some damage and it is probably the reason why you can't lose weight! Not eating slows your metabolism to a crawl. That, on top of the hypo, is a sure-fire way to keep the weight on, and sometimes even GAIN!! Check out our Diet & Fitness folder for lots of good tips and info on losing weight, seeing how many calories you need to eat and other things.

let me know about the medication, ok? Cathy :)
