blood sugar and thyroid

Hope I didn't ask this already!!!

Just wondering about blood sugar levels and thyroid conditions. If you are hypo will your sugar tend to be lower, and hyper (like me) will they be higher? I had gestational diabets (had to take insulin shots) and diabetes runs in my family. I have a tester here and I decided to check it. They weren't terribly high or anything just a little elevated. Fasting sugars have been 111, 113, 117 and after meal (just tested once) was 168.

Once my thyroid is straightened out will my sugar come back to normal or are they seperate things altoghter, even though they are both autoimmune problems.

Thanks!

Hi,

I am not sure about the relation of blood sugar to Thyroid problems, if any...but you made me think of something:

Is it feasible to one day have the technology for people that are Hypo/Hyperthyroid to test their own blood and administer their meds accordingly, as people with diabetes do?

Just wondering...

Hmmm... I dont know.

I know when I was prego and had to do insulin shots I just wrote down my numbers, brought it into my doc and the decided if I needed more insulin or not.

I dont know what veteran diabetics do to manage them. I wouldn't think they can just decide whether or not to give themselves more insulin just b/c if the dangers involved.

Hi,

I know a couple of people who are diabetic, and they both test their numbers and adjust the insulin accordingly. It also allows them to know what they can, or can't, eat depending on the numbers.

One of them is a boy (he's a teenager, now) who I used to baby-sit for. He has been testing himself and giving himself injections since he was 5! Amazing.

Sooo...why not (under a Dr.'s supervision, of course) can't we - Hypo/Hperthyroid patients - do the same??

There must be a reason...or it would be available, no?

Thanks so much! I looked around some, ok a lot, and couldn't really find anything that said it's associated. I sometimes want to try and research before calling my doc or talking to him about it so I can see if there is a link and yet another side effect of thyroid problems or if they are seperate on their own.

The only connection I saw was people with Type 1 diabetes are likely to have thyroid problems. I also saw hypothyroid people have low blood sugar. But I only saw one small webpage on that, so who really knows. If that were the case I would guess that hyper people have high sugar.

So confusing. I dont want to tell my doc yet, I'm afraid I may get on the chronic whiner list. I feel like every little thing I notice I think "is that b/c of my thyroid?!"
