Anything to give me ENERGY?

Hi, I asked my doctor if she could give me something to give me energy and she said she couldn't give me anything because she wanted to run more test and be sure about everything.  Right now I'm taking synthroid 25mg.  Is there anything anyone in here would recommend to give me energy?  Like vitamins, ginsana etc.

Also is it true that if one takes vitamins just to keep healthy it can make you gain weight?  I have been thinking on taking women vitamins but because I was told it makes you gain weight I haven't.  I don't want to gain more weight!  I'm almost 270  lbs!!!

Hi - no, there isn't anything about vitamins that would make you gain weight. There is a post here about supplements you can take for your overall health when you're hypothyroid and they might give you more energy but really, the thing that's going to help you the most is getting the right dose of medication and taking it consistnently. I'm glad you're doctor is being thorough in testing you. Once she's done, then you might have a better idea of what can help you. I'll try to find that vitamin post for you and post her later today,ok? Hope this helps! Cathy :)

Hi - I can't find that post!! So here it is again. This is from The Thyroid Solution by Dr. Ridha Arem- an excellent book, but the way.

Vitamin C: 250 to 1000 mg

Vitamin E: 200 to 800 IU

Beta Carotene: 1000 to 5000 IU

Selenium: 50 to 100 mcg

Zinc: 15 to 20 mg

A good B-complex

Vitamin B-6: 25 to 50 mg

Folic Acid: 400 to 600 mcg

ANd here is a list from Dr. Perricone's book, The Perricone Prescription. He calls it his "fat burning" formula. (That's a great book, by the way. )

Here it is:

CLA: 1000 mg - 3 to 4 times daily

ALA: 250-500 mg

Q10: 60 to 120 mg

DMAE: 75 mg two times a day (I haven't been taking these - they're expensive)

L-tyrosine - 500 mg 3 times a day

GLA/Evening primrose oil: 1000 mg

Omega 3 fatty acids: 500 mg 2 times a day (I'm taking one with omega 3 and 6)

He breaks it down for breakfast and lunch.

Here's breakfast: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, ALA, Q10, Omega 3 and GLA, CLA

Lunch: Vitamin C, ALA, Q10, Omega 3, GLA, CLA

His supplements aren't thyroid related but i found that they helped me with my energy level until I could get my medication increased.

And because my new endo was concerned about me taking all these supplements without any quality control to assure that they are safe and pure, I went on the Ask The Healthy Eating Expert site here on ivillage and asked her about it. Lynn Geiger gave me this site to check out different brands so it's very useful: http://www.consumerlab.com/

That's about it! I'm going to save this post for myself so I'll have it next time this subject comes up!! I hope it helps. Cathy :)

Hi - Vitamins are not cheap!! But you can get some good deals on vitamins even at your local drugstore. Nature's Bounty and Nature Made, as well as Vitamin World brand vitamins have all scored well in terms of purity and quality - actually having what they say they have in them! And sometimes you can get coupons in their flyers for 50% or by one get one free, so that saves some money. You can get a good multiple vitamin but you won't get the amounts needed and you may be taking things you don't need. You can get all the essential fatty acids, like GLA, ALA etc on that list, in one pill. You just have to look for it. You might be able to find a Vitamin E with selenium and other things in it, check for that, too. Try for a time released Vitamin C because that will last you all day. The most expensive one on that list is the CoQ10 - and that's one that's recommended for energy. You might want to just start with that one, and get a good multiple B vitamin. Check different stores and sales, though - because there can be a big difference in price depending on where you buy them. Hope this helps! Cathy :)
