Very Confused, Need Immediate Help......

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism almost 3 years ago, Shortly after I had my son. I just had a daughter. When I was pregnant, I did not take my synthroid after my 3rd month. During my last week of pregnancy, my levels were checked again. I was told they were "abnormal" OK, so my Midwife wanted to check them again at my 6 week postpartum appt. I just called today to find out what the results were. My Regular doctor told me that it has turned into Hyperthyroidism. I was shocked to find this out, it gave me an answer to why I lost ALL of my pregnancy weight and an extra pound in only 6 weeks. (28 pounds total) I took my synthroid for a few days at 2 weeks PP, then stopped because my milk supply decreased. I asked my Lactation Consultant today about it for concerns of my milk supply decreasing. I just dont know what to do now. I was told not to take meds anymore till i stop BFing. Is this possible? To go from hypo to hyper? Please Email me with your response. brianswife522@cox.net

TIA, Nikki

it is possible. and especially right after you have a baby. i am hypo and had a baby 7 mo's ago. i too became hyper but only for a short while and then majorly hypo again. i also lost all my weight very quickly. i have read tho, that it is very common for women after childbirth to become hyper- even women who do not have a thyroid condition. most often it clears up on its own and most women do not even know they were hyper. i am almost convinced that every women experiences this and this is God's way of getting us thru all those sleepless nights! who knows. but i do know it is common. what is your dr. saying? how many mo's PP are you? they may be saying not to take any thyroid meds cuz they want to see if it clears up on its own?

FYI: nxt pregnancy, take your synthroid if you are still hypo. it does not effect the baby in any way and it is one of the safest things you can take while pregnant. also, being hypo while pg. can cause birth defects and mental retardation in the baby. it is very important to take your meds.
